| | Trails in the "snow" this morning. Snow for North Alabama on a good day is flurries. This is what we had. 17 degrees when I got out of my car on the mountain. My thighs felt like huge, frozen hams for the entire run. All the water crossings/low parts that had water were frozen. This was a "fun" challenge for this clumsy girl. I tripped once, about .5 into the run. A large tree was across the trail and apparently I didn't lift my leg quite high enough to get over it. I was graceful though. We finished out the run climbing "death trail" which was pretty much like death for this novice trail runner. About a mile long and straight uphill! |

I ran 5.5 miles alone! I rarely run alone; if I do it's normally a measly 2 miles or so. Today's run is the farthest I've ever run at once. Ever. I'm quite proud of myself... even if it was quite slow. Maybe I am actually starting to take this more seriously??? If running alone I normally go in the neighborhood by my house. I don't enjoy it at all but it is a safe place to pound the pavement. Well today as I was getting ready I remembered an old railroad track that cuts the neighborhood in half. When I was younger and this wasn't a neighborhood but was cotton fields (yes, Alabama is still the land of cotton) my brother and I used to ride our bikes on it. So when I was in the neighborhood for my normal 2 mile run I instead turned right onto what I've always been told used to be an old railroad track. It had 2 "creek crossings" one of which I managed to get wet at both going and coming back. That was fun in 28 degree weather (windchill of 20 with brutal winds). The trail starts off being surrounded by houses on both sides but then moves onto cotton fields, a nursery, and a cow pasture (nothing like the fresh smell of manure). It is mostly a dirt road with some muddy sections that were pretty well frozen today. The highlight of my run was almost getting hit by a kid on a 4-wheeler.... ahhhhh, I love living in the country!
I am embarrassed to write down my official time. But I figure I'll never improve if I don't put it down to look back on as motivation. I ran 5.5 miles on a dirt road with a few small hills in 1:09. It was my first time on the trail so I'll use that as slow excuse #1. Slow excuse #2 will be that I'm a cupcake. Plain and simple. This will be dubbed the railroad track trail and I hope to eventually cut 10ish+ minutes off of that time.
Oh yea... the best part of my run: Betsy (my garmin) says that I burned 735 calories. I'm sure that is not entirely accurate (by a long shot) but it still makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Now if I could miraculously drop 20 lbs overnight.... |

| | COLD! Was supposed to run 4 but my buddy and I missed a turn somewhere. It was dark. I wore capri tights because all my full length ones need to be washed and that isn't happening anytime soon. My legs never warmed up. Grrr.... Alabama isn't used to this consistent cold streak. We're going on a week now with no temps above freezing. And, it is going to continue for at least another week. I don't like it! |

| | Speed workout. My first ever. We sprinted the straights and walked/jogged the curves. I really enjoyed it which I was not expecting at all! I'm sure I will not say that in the heat of the summer. But with it being so cold my legs were numb and I couldn't feel the burn. It was fun... and I found out that I'm faster than I thought... for .10 of a mile! Once again, it was COLD! I don't see how you people from naturally cold climates do it. I am miserable! It's actually not so bad when running. It the walking in/out of work thing that sucks. And the socializing before and after the run. Brrrrr...... Alabama needs to get in gear and get back up to our normal temps in the 40's for this time of year! |

| | Wasn't planning on running today. But we're supposed to have actual accumulation of snow tomorrow in North Alabama (can you believe it) so I probably will not be out in it. It was cold and I really wasn't feelin' it. So I took the short side (left) of the Railroad Track Trail and just ran it in the dark. I got a little scared in the DARK! Even with my headlamp. I will be completely honest and say that I am terrified of the dark. I don't know what possessed me to turn out of the neighborhood and onto the trail. Ahhhhh... I am reading the Twilight series right now (yes, I am one of them) and I thought of freakin' vampires when I was in the middle of the woods all alone. Not Good. So, I got to my turn around point as quickly as possible (in reality still very slow) and then headed back to the gloriously lit neighborhood. I'm glad I got the miles in but it was dark and cold. More importantly it was dark. Did I mention that? Pretty sure my dreams of an ultra will never happen if I can't even run a trail 1/4 mile from a neighborhood without having a cow about the lighting conditions... |

Dreadmill. It sucked. We have actual snow on the ground here. About 30 degrees so I decided to run inside b/c I am clumsy enough without help from Mother Nature when I'm out running. I was totally inspired by Kelli's speed workout of 7 miles on the treadmill the other day. So I thought I would try something like it. I ran a .50 warmup. Then ran 1 minute at 8 minute miles and walked one minute for 10 reps. Then I walked on 10 incline for .30 and about died. I'm training for a 14 mile trail race with some pretty good climbs so I thought this was good practice. Then I went back to speed work. This time doing 30 seconds at 7:15 pace and 1 minute walking. It was hard. I was dying. I am not a fast runner. AT ALL. I walked more incline at the end and ended up doing 3.1 miles total. I didn't do a good job of keeping up with how many reps I did of each thing b/c this young guy about my age got on the treadmill right next to me. I mean, 100 other ones were open and he had to get right next to me. And then he tried to talk to me. No Thank You. So that distracted me and made me forget my count.
Also, I played volleyball at lunch. Does that count as cross training? I'm sure all the laughing and joking around I did equals about 30 minutes on the eliptical (aka the devil), right?
Oh, and let me add a big Roll Tide! That is the main reason I didn't do a normal night run. I didn't want to miss the big game! I was raised an Alabama fan and still cheer them on and love to watch football. I am proud of the SEC and proud of my state! |

Did the railroad track trail with a little extra today. I was trying to get in 7 miles and came pretty darn close. It is still below freezing outside (31 degrees when I got back) but most of the snow has melted that is on land. The wind was brutal but the glorious sun was out today. It really was a nice run. I managed to soak my entire left foot about 3 miles into the run. That was fun! It was definitely cold for the rest of my run. I did see this at about 2.75 miles and thought it was absolutely beautiful. I even had to get out my cell and take a picture of it! That is a low spot that is always full of water. In the summer it is a huge mosquito hole (did you know that the mosquito is the state bird of Alabama??) but right now it is still covered in snow and is so pretty! So after being home just long enough to shower, I went to the gym. My BFF has decided that she would like to get in shape. So I told her I would run with her whenever she wanted. Well she called at 5:30 and said she wanted to run but it's too cold outside so could we do the dreadmills instead. (by the way, she is a pansy. it's 20 degrees outside) So to the gym we went! We get there and she doesn't even RUN! She "can't run on treadmills" apparently. Well then why am I out in the 20 degree weather with my hair still wet and I'm completely exhausted for you to walk at a very slow pace?? (love you, Amy!) I figured since I was out I should take advantage of what was in front of me. So I ran a .50 warmup again and then did speed work until 1 mile. Oh man it sucked. I was already tired from my earlier run. Then I started walking and talking to Amy. I alternated between walking .25 flat and walking .25 at 10% incline which was very steep for 1.6 miles. My legs, thighs, butt, thighs, and did I mention thighs were burning. That incline is no joke! I was pretty pleased with the incline workout. I definitely need that in preparation for McKay. I know that I will not be running those hills so a good quick walk will be nice.

| | Hmmmm... I wish that's what my GPA was right now! In my dreams!!! I set out to run 4ish miles and came out with 4.02. So that was pretty much perfect. Nice temps here; starting in the 40's. Today was the first day we've had above freezing in 2 weeks! Some people were out grilling and it smelled so so so good. The fat kid in me wanted to stop and have a bite to eat. I was definitely hot by the end of my run. I turned down a side street I haven't ran since summer in order to get my 4 miles in. I was at 3.6ish without that street. Well I think about 107 dogs must live down there (.5 mile dead end road). Most of them were not fenced; another perk of country life! They were barking at me and it was kinda scary as I'm a big sissy. I kinda clapped my hands at the most forceful one and said "go away" (I know... how intimidating) and he kinda sorta left me alone after that. I found my iPod yesterday after it had been missing for a few weeks. My car likes to eat things sometimes. Note to KP: Clean your car out. I only listen to it on solo runs. Tonight I had a nice combination of Journey's Greatest Hits, The Eagles Greatest Hits, and Simon & Garfunkels Greatest Hits. Needless to say it was a very mellow run. My favorite song for the night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdP3nZMZQbs Hmmmm... anyways. So I got all the way back home and was climbing the stairs to go into the house and the outside of my right knee starts throbbing. It is still hurting. Ouch! Wonder what it is. |

| | Ummmm... I cheated on my "rest" time. It was absolutely spectacular when I left work today; a nice 44 degrees and the sun was setting into a beautiful sunset. I texted my BFF, Amy, who has decided that she wants to "get in shape" to see if she was up for a quick jog. I know that she can't go far so I thought it would be a good way for me to see how the ol' knee was feeling. Well, she had plans with her boyfriend. How dare she!!!! Needless to say, by the time she and I texted back and forth over my drive home I was in the mood to do a few miles. Remember how nice it was when I left work (nice in a cardigan and winter coat I had on) well I decided to wear shorts and a long sleeve Patagonia capiline shirt, which is pretty thin. I was pretty cold the whole run as it was 37 degrees by the time I actually started; the sun had already set. Oh well, it just makes my legs numb! You would think with all the extra fat they are carrying around that they'd be quite toasty though... So, the knee was feeling quite a bit better. I could still feel a little sharp pain in it, but not near as bad as it had been. I will rest it Thursday as I have class then and Friday as I am young and have a life. So I think it will be good to go for 5 or so miles on the mountain Saturday morning. Tonight's music mostly consisted of CCR. Classic! Although my favorite song of the night, and the only non-CCR song was by Queen. Please listen and enjoy. This is seriously my new anthem. LOVE IT! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEbEMjKitA4 |

Stopped at gym on my way home from class at 8PM. It was way too crowded for my liking. Anyways, I forced myself to go in even after seeing the amount of cars in the parking lot. Ran .5 warmup and then alternated between .25 walking on 10 incline (sucks!) and .25 walking at 0 incline (fabulous!). I'm trying to strengthen my legs a bit for the uphill climbs I know are ahead for the trail half I'm doing. Also played volleyball for 1.5 hours today. We were playing 3 on 4 (I was on the team of 3 that WON) today as some of our regulars are in Phoenix at a conference. It was a good workout and brutal on my knees as I was diving from one end of the court to the other. I really should quit being so aggressive... It's my favorite sport though. Where as I don't care about winning at running, I do care about it in volleyball; even when it's just a pick-up game we do every Thursday. Okay, Nevels, my friend. Can you figure out what my favorite song of the night was from this. You are an engineer after all. This should be right up you ally. By the way, do you listen to current music? If not you may have no clue what I'm talking about. Okay, hint: (RAH)² (AH)³ + RO (MA + MAMA) + (GA)² + OOH(LA)²Do ya know it? Huh? Huh? Huh? Do ya? I'll give you another hint: She is a complete and total FREAK! And, I totally jam to her music for some reason. Okay, it's GaGa. That would be Lady GaGa if you are unfamiliar with current music trends and have no clue what I am talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I

I have the day off work today; thank you MLK! I didn't do my long run yesterday because it rained all weekend here and I knew that I had off work today in order to get in a few extra miles. Yesterday I finally went and bought some trail shoes. I got the Montrail Streaks and I love them! I have had a difficult time finding the perfect road shoe as they all seem to hurt badly until I get them broken in. I didn't have any pain from these shoes today and that was a major bonus in my book. Last night I took my first of 8 consecutive "Yoga for Runners" classes at our local Fleet Feet store. I did it with 4 of my good friends and had a great time. I normally don't have any trouble bending down and touching my toes, but that is about the extent of my flexibility. This class was a challenge! It is taught by one of our local ultra runners who does 100's. She is awesome! Anyways, WOW! I enjoyed the class but definitely struggled a bit. One older lady was in the class and she did worse than me. Thank goodness for her! I think everyone else was a pro... made me look bad! I enjoyed my run today. My brand new trail shoes are now completely covered in mud. With all the rain we've had my 2 creek crossings were up and I definitely got wet today. I practically went for a swim in the one that normally just gets me a bit wet. After my shoes got completely soaked they were SO heavy. The weight of the mud and the wetness factor really got to me mentally. It seemed like each foot weighed 50 pounds! My hips were killing me from about the halfway point on. I can only assume it is due to the yoga class from last night as we definitely did some hip stretches. Over time these are supposed to help with my running (I assume) but it caused me a great deal of pain today. Overall it was a great run. The temps started about 45 and it was nearly 60 when I finished. This is why I love Alabama... 60 degree temps in January. It was a perfect day. I wore shorts and a thin long sleeve shirt. This was the first run in months that I haven't worn gloves and ear warmers. It felt great to put a hat back on! Oh yea... edited to add: When I was just starting out on the trail (maybe .25 into it from the neighborhood) a kid on a 4-wheeler came up behind me but I didn't hear him because I was jammin' to my iPod. Well he slowed down to pass me (thank you!) and I didn't realize he was there until he was literally right next to me. I screamed, and I mean LOUD, right in his ear because he scared me to death. I nearly had a heart attack! Poor kid; he'll probably have hearing problems in his right ear now.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand - strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOOOOHOOOO!!!! - What a ride!!!
-Mavis Leyrer
Ran 2 at lunch with my ultra buddy. IT band started hurting again. Darn.
Did the dreadmill with Amy (bff) on my way home from class. Ran a .50 mile warmup then did a run/walk combo with incline thrown in. I was too busy talking to remember the specifics. I do recall running .25 a few times at an 8:30 pace and .15 at a 7:20 pace. I know that is a minimal distance, but who knew I had it in me!??!? It actually felt good. Then I did 10 minutes on the bike for the heck of it. That did not feel good. It hurts my butt; am I the only one? Then I did 35 crunch things in the ab-room. What got into me? Really, Amy was trying to waste a little time before meeting her boyfriend when he got off of work. So we did the bikes and abs in order to kill time. We should do it more often because killing time or not, it is still good for us! |

| | I had a "toothache" at work and left early to run with my girlfriends. We planned to do 8 but it started to get a bit dark so we turned around shortly after 3.5 to head back to the car. My ITB was a dull but doable pain for the first 3 or so miles. After that it became excruciating. I've played "real" sports my entire life and have had injuries but nothing like this. It was horrible. Horrible. We were taking it easy, running 5/1's (run 5 minutes, walk 1 minute) and that was going well until my knee gave. I stuck with the plan the whole time because I am horrible and have a "suck it up" mentality that isn't always a good thing. That 1 minute seemed to go by quicker and quicker. My blessed and lovely friend Laura tried to keep me deep in conversation in order to not think about the pain. It didn't work, but I appreciated her effort. When we got back to the parking lot and were talking for a few minutes, my knee got VERY stiff from just standing around. I could hardly walk the 20 feet to the car. It was pathetic. Then, I had a party to go to. Which meant I had to go shower. Getting out of the car and climbing the steps might've been one of the worst things in my life. I've never given birth to a child, so I will rank it right up there with that kind of pain. Horrible. Needless to say, I wasn't moving well last night. When I got back home I did the roller which moved me to tears. I slept horrible, about 4 hours. This morning I hobbled down the stairs at 5:45 to go work Mountain Mist, a local 50k that Nevels was running. It was a slow and labored walk, but I really forced myself to put some weight on my knee. I took 3 Advil (unusual for me; I generally don't take any medicine) to dull the pain. My knee did well at the race. I hobbled around and really began to walk seemingly normal on it although it still hurt. Nevels did not run. PANSY!!! He had some lame excuse about being sick. He was there to cheer on his buds and it was good to chat with him about Lady Gaga (yes, that is just for you Burt) and some guys wicked awesome tattoos; they were insane. The race was a lot of fun and I had a good time with my girlfriends. Anyways, that is my long, drawn-out knee pain injury story. I am disappointed in myself for being such a baby over it. I am normally not like this at all. It just hurts. Plain and simple. I'll definitely be taking a few days off. I plan to do the roller this week and maybe try to get in 10 or so on Saturday. Hopefully I'll be back up to par by then. |

I miss running more than I would've ever thought. I've thought about crosstraining. I hate the elip with a passion. The bike hurts my butt. First form of exercise in 9+ days... I've missed it.
Planned to just walk on the dreadmill but once I got to the gym I couldn't just walk. So I walked .50 at 15min/mile (that's a pretty quick walk!); ran .25 at 8ish min/mile. I continued that until I hit 2 miles; walking 1.5 and running .50. It took me 27:00 on the dot, which, in reality isn't too much slower than I run... maybe I should become a speed-walker! My knee was hurting pretty badly and I probably should've just stuck to walking. It is just so boring!!!!
I plan to walk a few times this week (and, yes, I will actually walk) and hopefully get into the sports doc tomorrow. Note to KP: Call Sports Doc.

| | I was cleared by the sports doc yesterday to run as long as I "take it easy" and continue on the foam roller a lot. I did 3.3 on the treadmill tonight with a run/walk combo. I would run for a while (0.50-1.0 depending on which time) and then walk .50 at a 15 minute pace to rest my knee a bit. I could definitely feel a slight pain but I was so happy to be running! I hope to get in a long run this weekend pending weather. I definitely will not be doing it on the treadmill....... I'd rather saw my arm off with a dull butter knife! |

Still a very nice, pleasant, 27* run with my friends. I didn't want to cut it short but I'd rather be 100% for upcoming races rather than unable to race at all because I'm still injured. My calf was very tight; don't think I've ever had that ailment before... Favorite song from the night Makes me wanna go for a milkshake; anyone up for Steak N Shake???? Nothing like watching Hannity (I love Fox News) and mens figure skating at the Olympics (GO USA) while trying not to fall off the treadmill. I was posed with quite a dilemma tonight. Do I go for my normal Tuesday run on the dreaded treadmill with Amy at my side? Or, do we go over to IHOP and enjoy the National Pancake Day festivities and get ourselves a free stack and gossip? I, being the dedicated runner than I am, of course chose what any broke college student would choose... Free food! Needless to say, I am quite happy with my decision. Amy and I had a great time.
I'll leave you with my facebook status for the night:
Just fought the masses, waited 45 minutes for a table, and saw a fight break out all for free pancakes. Thank you IHOP!!! |

| | I'm on a girls getaway this weekend. I hope to get in a few miles while here. I ran around a lovely little river today. TONS of fisherman out... I mean tons for a Thursday afternoon at 3pm; do these people not work?? Apparently it is fishing season for some specific fish in North Alabama. Bass maybe? 40* out; perfect for shorts and a long tech shirt. I passed these 3 men on a small, pedestrian bridge that made me a bit nervous... One of them told me I was pretty (yes, I'm serious) which made me even more nervous. No harm done though. Also, I saw more squirrels on this run then I have ever seen in my life. They were running out in front of me and everything... what's up with the squirrels and the fishermen? And, obviously this is a very scattered post.... just what was running through my mind. |

Still on my girls trip... Went to the same place to run today - did the loop 3 times. Once again, saw a ton of squirrels and fisherman. I had to pee sooooo bad that I went in the only somewhat hidden location I could find... in a briar patch. Yes, that was FUN! Weather was perfect, absolutely perfect. This was the first time I've run sans gloves and ear warmers in months and it was wonderful. It was 50* out.... Hello spring!! Today, I went shopping at the ultimate redneck hangout. This place is interesting. They actually have some pretty cool stuff. I bought 2 dresses, a shirt, and a coat; all brand name and I only spent $50... makes for a happy KP! Back to my girls now. I think we'll have margarita's for dinner. Tasty...

Let me preface by saying I hate the treadmill. Hate it. I can't seem to run as far on it as I do on the road. I know it is all mental which is frustrating to me. It is what it is... I'm working on it. I ran 2 miles without stopping (a huge accomplishment for me on the treadmill. heck, it's a huge accomplishment for me period) in 20 minutes... 10 minute miles is also pretty quick for me. Then I walked another 10 minutes bringing my total to 2.55. I was sweating and dying and I had a married man (he was wearing a wedding ring!) hit on me tonight. Lovely.
Also did 70 crunch thingies... I'm trying to strengthen my core a bit. Now on to stats homework. Anyone wanna help me? Ugh. |

| | Treadmill. Honestly one of the best workouts I've had in a while. It was short, but I pushed the pace (for me) and actually enjoyed it! And you know what, enjoying it is all that matters... Ran 1 mile @ 10:30 pace Ran .5 mile @ 8:30 pace Alternated running .10 @ 7:30 pace and walking .10 @ 15:00 pace. Total 3.1 for that little workout. Then I walked until my BFF on the treadmill hit 2.25. I was at 3.52 at that point. Then did some core work which was h-a-r-d. I think I've decided to give up my dream of having abs (I have a LONG ways to go...) and just have a fat stomach and look not-so-cute in my bikini this summer. |

Since I haven't been running long, I don't have much to compare today's run to. But, I will just go ahead and state that it was my best run ever! Felt great. Could've gone longer but my girls and I had a free pancake breakfast to attend. You clearly see where our priorities are... My only complaint would be that I was burping beer, pizza, and cake the whole time. I guess that's what I get for having that stuff at 1AM (while watching a special on the Real Housewives series) when we were running at 7AM. Fun night - totally worth the burping. :) This is what I looked like: 1 week until I'm participating in (notice I didn't say running??) Delano. What am I getting myself into?

| | Very slow run with my girls on the trails of Monte Sano. Absolutely gorgeous day. I think (and hope) that Spring is finally here. I'm sure we'll have a few more cold days, but I'm ready for the pleasant temps that Alabama is accustom to for this time of year. This is the first time I've ran trails since hurting my IT band (like 2 months) and it was much more painful than the road (I'm pretty much pain-free on the road now...). I guess it is the constant up and down and steep hills and jumping over rocks, etc. My right knee was hurting pretty badly and then I twisted my right ankle which caused an interesting limping situation. I was trying to put more weight on my left leg which somehow caused me to rub a blister onto the ball of my left foot even though I was wearing smartwools. Darn. Oh well... I still had an excellent morning and an excellent run with my friends. In 3 weeks we'll be doubling this distance and running McKay Hollow; should be fun (and slow and painful)! As usual, we went to Starbucks after our run. I then came home and took an absolutely wonderful nap. Lovely. Now: Homework (booooooo...) and, later: yoga! Hope y'all are having a nice weekend! |

Delano 12 hour 09:00:00
Short version: I shuffled my feet for 32 miles. Long version: I had soooooo many concerns going into this race. What am I thinking? Is my goal of 31 miles out of reach? How will my stomach handle having to eat while running? Did I seriously sign up for an ultra when the most I've ever raced is a 5k? Will I break down mentally? What am I thinking? What if the weather is bad? Can I run a 1-mile loop over and over again all day without getting bored? WHAT AM I THINKING? The Delano 12 is a 12-hour event on a certified 1-mile loop course. You run the circle as many times as you can. It's a perfect venue for someone like myself to try something a bit more "challenging" than I'm used to. Aid is available every mile. If for some reason I feel I can't go on, my car is literally right there where the aid is. Perfect. Plus, all my buddies were doing it. So it was like social hour X 12. Even better. The event really began when FRB's very own, John Nevels, started running at 6PM on Friday night in an attempt to run 100 miles in 24 hours or less. My buddies and I went over to cheer him on for his first mile and then went to a lovely little pasta dinner that was being put on by the RD's. I had a goal of being in a drug-induced coma (tylenol pm) by 9PM Friday night. Well, I finally took the drugs about 10:30PM and still really couldn't sleep. I would think about John or what I was getting myself into in a few hours or how I was absolutely nuts, etc.... not a good night of sleep. My alarm went off at 4:04AM on Saturday and I grabbed a quick shower and was then on my way to Decatur. After about an hour or so drive I arrive at Delano Park approx 40 minutes prior to the start. The place is already packed. People are unloading tents to prepare for the long day and all that goes with them: chairs, blankets, aid, drinks, tables, heaters, tarps, coolers, etc. At this point, John is still running circles. Crazy! It's 6AM and we're off! My plan for the entire day was to do a run/walk combo, as I knew I was in way over my head on the whole running thing. So when my friend Brandi asked me to run the first 2 miles with her I had a real internal struggle. Brandi was on a relay team and is just returning from an injury. She has run a total of 10ish miles since being cleared by the doctor to run again. I didn't want to mess up my "plan" but thought that it would be nice to run with her for a few miles to get warmed up. So, from the very beginning I screwed the plan and just went on how I felt. After my 2 miles with Brandi I thought I'd go back to my original plan, which was to run 5/1's (run 5 minutes, walk 1 minute) for as long as I could. Well, I don't mind running them with a group... but they are pure torture to run alone. That didn't last 30ish minutes and then I went to running landmarks. For the remainder of the day (and it was a long day) I ran the "zig-zag section" and from the "water fountain" to the "75" marker. Then I ran the final stretch from "the tree" through the "finish line" on every single lap for the rest of the day. I know that means nothing to you unless you were there. But mentally, this was huge for me. I knew where I had to run and where I got to walk on every lap and it was awesome. I loved it. It basically equaled me running about 1/2 mile and walking about 1/2 mile for the entire course. It worked really well for me. I stopped to call my mom at a half marathon and give her an update. I changed socks at this time too and put band-aid's on my feet as I could already feel the blisters forming. This was a nice little break. I didn't really have any pain issues until mile 20ish. About that time my hips really started to hurt and my feet... Oh my pitiful feet. They were killing me. At a marathon I took off my old shoes (with no inserts - probably where the pain is from) and put on my trail shoes. I wore my old shoes for the day because I didn't want to get my new shoes muddy and ruin them. At that point my feet were already swollen and very much in pain. So, the trail shoes just hurt them in different areas. No biggie. I had 5 laps to go and I was going to get to 31 miles even if I had to crawl. After I reached a marathon I slowed down considerably. I stopped to stretch my hips some and just took it easy chatting with some of my friends that had already quit for the day. I knew I had enough time to finish and I just relaxed a bit. About this time I rested for a few extra minutes to watch John finish up his 100-mile feat in a huge PR for him of 19:42:53. Awesome! I was so proud of him! The last 6 miles (I did an extra mile just for good measure) were torture. That darn foot pain. I can tell you that looking at my feet right now I have huge bruises on them. How did that happen? My buddy Joey started running again after a 2ish hour break on mile 30 with me. I was glad to have him there on my last 2 laps. We crossed the finish/start line with 14ish minutes left on the clock until it hit 9 hours. I told him that I wanted to get one more mile in by that time and for him to push me as my pace had slowed considerably. We did my first normal walk break but skipped the other one. He had me going at like a 9:00 pace. It was hurting badly that late in the day. We were already running quickly as we approached "the tree" where I would normally start running for the final stretch. At that point I started to sprint I was so relieved to be done. The end was in sight. It was an absolutely fantastic feeling. We made 9 hours with a little bit of time to spare. I was thrilled. Joey pushing me on my final lap. Contrary to what this picture may make you believe, I do, in fact, have a neck... I sat down in a lovely little chair by a heater after that and cheered on my crazy friends that still ran for the next 3 hours. I know that a 9-hour 50k is nothing to write home about to all your "serious runners" but I could not be more proud of myself. I thought that a 50k was somewhat doable in 12; I never in a million years thought that I'd get it in 9. Fantastic!!! Now 24+ hours and 2 gruesome ice baths later I can honestly say that I feel pretty good. My feet are still killing me. Other than that, I have no muscle or joint issues to speak of. My IT band isn't bothering me; nor my hips. I am glad that my feet are my only issue and I hope they are feeling better tomorrow, as I have to run with a training group... Oh boy! On second thought, I might just walk it... To address the concerns I had prior to the race, I thought I'd give you a little break down: Is my goal of 31 miles out of reach? 31 miles definitely wasn't a ludicrous goal like I had originally though it would be. If I had really wanted to torture myself I think I could've made 40. I don't regret my decision to call it a day at 32 one bit, though. How will my stomach handle having to eat while running? I probably ate less than most of the other folks out there, but it was A LOT for me. I had 3-4 bottles of water throughout the 9 hours, some chocolate chip cookies, and a little individual package of nuts. Oh, and a piece of pizza after mile 20. No stomach issues whatsoever. I was pleasantly surprised. Did I seriously sign up for an ultra when the most I've ever raced is a 5k? Yep. I sure did. It was a bit out of my box. I have only raced (slowly) one 5k and the most I'd ever run in a day was 9 miles. That was back in January when I hurt my IT band. A friend really encouraged me to do it; without him I probably would've just sat home all day. I am eternally grateful that he pestered me about it until I registered. Will I break down mentally? I was really worried about breaking down mentally. I prepared my iPod with lots of good songs incase I needed it. I never once faltered or doubted myself the entire race, which was a fantastic feeling. If anything, I would think about the pain towards the end. At that point I would just say to myself "suck it up Kristen... only 4 miles to go..." I just kept repeating those words in my head. If I was feeling crappy towards the finish line I just kept on moving right past the aid station without even saying hello to my friends. They were a bit worried about me. I was simply "in the zone". I didn't use my iPod either. I enjoyed looking around and listening to people as they passed and would've missed all that had I been jammin' in my own little world. What if the weather is bad? The weather. Oh my. Well, Delano isn't known for falling on nice weather days. They've had snow and torrential rains the past few years. This year was no different. It was sprinkling when I left the house about 4:30am and it was pouring on much of my drive. That was not a good feeling. It had let up by the time I arrived at Delano Park. It was sprinkling at the 6am start time; nothing too bad though. The first few miles were fine. Then it started to rain harder. Everything felt fine except for my hands. They were like ice-cubes. It was horrible. I had on gloves but they weren't helping any. I did have another pair but I hated to get them out less than 10 miles into the race if it was going to be like this all day. So I toughed it out and the rain let up. The sun even came out for a few minutes; just enough to dry us off a bit. Then the rain started again. It was like this all day long. Rain, sun, rain, sun, rain, sun. Oh, and throw in a 10-15 minute hailstorm right in the middle. That was fun (and extremely painful). I was running next to a guy that had just ditched his shirt at that time and he was not a happy camper. I zipped my jacket all the way up, popped my collar, and ran with my head down. The hail really hurt when it hit my neck! The course did get quite muddy with 200 feet trampling it for hours on end. I, personally, thought it was fun. In one particular section you have to make a sharp turn in what is probably the muddiest portion of the course and people kept swinging out wider and wider. This amused me for some reason. I just plowed right through it every time. That mud wasn't making me slower to go through it and it wasn't making them faster to go around it. Can I run a 1-mile loop over and over again all day without getting bored? I can honestly say that with 32 miles I didn't get bored once. Had I, I would've gotten out my iPod. I had it charged and ready to go, just incase. I loved this race. After the race, the RD's had another pasta dinner for all the participants and crew and volunteers and spectators and families. It was nice to sit down and chat with everyone and recap the day. After that some of us headed to a local bar for a few beers. It was a good ending to a lovely day. I couldn't be happier. Great day. Great race. I look forward to doing it again.

| | I'm going to say this was right around 2 miles. I went sans Garmin. Took my friends 2 beagles on a run/walk. It was lovely outside. 70 degrees lovely. PERFECTION. Run went relatively well until the younger of the 2 beagles (7 months or so) who was all over the place when running darted right in front of me and I tripped over her leash. Needless to say I took a nice fall. I have a pretty scratched up hand and elbow. I was actually quite pleased with it though; I was on the ground just long enough to hit my hand and elbow and land on my hip (which is now hurting) before I rolled right out of it just like in my old volleyball days. I managed to let go of both leashes when I fell so I quickly grabbed them and took off running again; bloody hand and all. Of course, I fell right in front of a little girl and mom out playing in their front yard. They just stared at me and I waved to them with blood running down my hand. Nice. |

| | So a new training group started last week that I'm helping to coach. It's for a 5k that is in 10 weeks. We were supposed to do run/walk as 1/2 (run 1 minute/walk 2 minutes) for 1 mile which is quite boring. But, this is week 2 and a lot of these people have never ever ever run before and are out of shape. So, they start off easy the first 2 weeks and then start doing all running for those that want it and increasing the mileage. Well, one girl in my group was doing really well and I asked her if she wanted to keep running rather than walk when we were supposed to stop to walk (whoops - I'll probably get in trouble for that. Bad KP. She said she was bored too, though) and she quickly agreed. So we ran a mile in a 9-minute pace. I was very impressed with her. It was nice to have someone to chat with. And, she was close to my age! I'll have to find out more info about her (like her name...). But, I have a feeling we'll be running together a lot through this program and I'm looking forward to it. So, basically a not-challenging night at all mileage wise, but it was nice to chit-chat with someone. |

| | So, tonight was another training group that I kinda help with some. It's a 10k program on Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings. I normally can only make Saturday's as I have class on Tuesday nights. It's spring break this week (yippee!!!!) so I went out with a friend that could kick my butt any day yet she is still actually in the program. She is seriously way overqualified for it. The loop was supposed to be 3 miles. Obviously it was a little short. I ran 2.85 in 26:20 which is huge for me. Y'all know I'm slow. REAL SLOW. I didn't know I had that in me. I wish I would've kept going around the parking lot in order to get a full 5k in. It would've been around 28 minutes; relatively slow compared to y'all. But, that is zooming for me. Needless to say, I was quite happy. I seriously didn't know if I'd ever break 30 minutes in a 5k. I guess that this running crap really is paying off ;-) I was pretty tired at the end. My legs felt very heavy. How do y'all maintain that pace (actually much much MUCH faster) for 26.2 miles (or more)? Wow. I see where I am on the running totem pole. I'm not even the dirt at the base of it... |

Unexpected run with a buddy that lives close by. We passed each other on the way home and I called him and said "wanna run" and he quickly agreed. Big mistake, KP. Big mistake. He kicked my butt. I am exhausted. Oh, and he complimented my calf muscles. Calf muscles! If that doesn't make me feel attractive, I don't know what does! HA!

McKay Hollow Madness Trail Run (14.2 Miles) 03:45:05, Place overall: 128
All you really need to know: Shuffle, ouch, mud, shuffle, walk, ouch, ouch, ouch, blister, walk, mud, shuffle, mud, ouch, walk, mud, exhausted...
If you're really bored:
I would advise you not read this, as it is VERY long. Apparently I had lots to say. I think Chris M’s work is more interesting than this (see "Personal" section). When you finish that, (it'll never happen…) come back to this.
This race is what made me decide I wanted to start upping my mileage a bit. I ran 2-3 miles 2 or so times a week. Nothing special. I often walked, and as always, was slow. I love the outdoors and have always enjoyed hiking. I knew of longer trail runs from friends (I’m talking 50k+) and wanted something shorter. Well, McKay Hollow Madness is as short as it gets around here for trail races. 14.2 miles. Okay, I can do that. I just needed to increase my mileage a little. I started running more right around the holidays. Of course, with that mileage increase came a painful IT band injury. After taking several weeks off and easing back into running, I registered for McKay, very VERY unprepared.
Luckily, beautiful Monte Sano State Park is in my hometown. A quick 20-minute drive to town and I could be there to run the course. My friends and I ran it several times prior to my IT issues. That injury happened and they started training for the New Orleans half which meant no more trail runs for a while (unless I wanted to go alone). So, going into this race, I had only seen a little over half of the course. They ran the back 5ish miles twice and both times I was out of town. No big deal though.
5:05AM – My alarm goes off. I shower, dress, and drive to Monte Sano arriving just after 6AM for a 7AM start. About the time I arrived at the park I realized I left my “hat” at home. Leaving just my hat at home would be no big deal as I have extras in my car. But, inside my hat were body glide, my Garmin, and my camera; all at home. I try not to look at my Garmin while running (don’t want to look at my pace and get depressed about how slow it is), but I like to have it with me so I can look at my total distance and possibly look at my splits after the race. My Type A personality didn’t like that I wouldn’t be running with something that I always have for races. Oh well, moving on… I socialized with my friends for a while when I arrived. It was supposed to be a nice day out, but man was it windy and chilly that morning. Did I mention the wind? Wow. About 10 minutes before the start I stripped off my sweats and very warm jacket and put on an extra hat I had in my car. Some of my friends had been standing around in just their race clothes for an hour. I don’t see how they did that!
7AM – And we’re off! We start in the parking lot and run about a mile or so (probably less – no Garmin, I don’t know for sure) down the road in the park until we drop off onto a trail. I got at the back of the pack and didn’t even here the RD say, “go” to start the race. I just followed everyone. I started off with 2 girlfriends that I run with on a regular basis but I left them before we even dropped into the woods. I had been debating for a while about if I should run with them (likely a little slower than I could do) or if I should run my own race and not worry about them. I literally decided to run my own race when I pulled away from them on the road. I figured I had nothing to lose.
We dropped into the woods and immediately were on a very runable, single-track, downhill section. A lady about 5 people in front of me was walking. WALKING! It was like a conga line behind me because we could’ve definitely been moving faster than that. It was like this for probably a half mile before she finally moved over and let us pass. That frustrated me quite a bit. I knew I’d be walking a lot during the day but I sure didn’t want to be walking that early on; especially on a section I should be cruising down. The girl right in front of me was running with what I assume was her dad. She looked young (17 or so) and had on brand new road shoes. Big mistake. She was still in front of me when we encountered our first bit of mud. Her shoes were ruined. She was trying to tiptoe around it as I was splashing right through it. This is a very muddy course. Very muddy. In my opinion, the mud makes it more fun though. It wasn’t too long before I passed her and her dad and I could tell she was struggling already. (They ended up being some of the last finishers, but I'm proud that she fought to the end. I honestly thought she'd drop from the way she looked at that point.) I stayed with the same core group of women for several miles; all of us leap-frogging one another throughout the course. I was in the front for a while and was gaining a lead on them but then I lost my shoe in the mud, twice. It was thick and sticky and the kind of Alabama mud that suctions to your shoes. I HATE having my shoes tied tight and actually rarely retie them. I just slip them on and off all the time. I decided after having to stop for the second time to fix my shoe and get passed by my group of 7 or so women that it was time to suck it up and double-tie them. I took a moment to do that and was off to catch back up with them. I had caught all but 3 of them when I got to aid station #1. 5.1 miles. I looked down at my watch, (just a regular old Timex – not my Garmin) 1:10 had passed. That’s much faster than I normally run when I’m with my friends. I was pleased to say the least.
To get to aid station 1 you have to climb the first big hill of the day. And although most would argue that it is not the toughest, it is by far my least favorite. Leaving the aid station, I went ahead of all those women except for 1. I had 3 pretzels at my stop (and actually ate them on the run) and that was it. It’s nice and flat for about half a mile or so. Then, we drop back down into the hollow. Right before we drop off onto Rest Shelter trail, the main trail keeps going straight. 2 people in front of me kept going. I almost said something to them about going the wrong way. But, then I figured they were dropping, as this was the best place to do that if you felt you couldn’t make it. I know that I certainly wouldn’t want to hear “hey you’re going the wrong way” if I were quitting. So, I decided to mind my own business since the course was clearly marked. I had a blast going down Rest Shelter! It’s a downhill section that I normally just about walk I’m going so slowly down it with my friends. We’re all a bit apprehensive about letting gravity take over and just running on these rocky downhill sections. I was right on the lady in front of me heels and I liked chasing her. I moved much faster than I ever had before and thought to myself during this downhill section that I could maybe make a halfway decent trail runner if I could increase my stamina and not suck so much at the uphill portions.
You are officially in the hollow once you reach the bottom of Rest Shelter. This now becomes “slush mile” because it is wet and mud and deep and cold and mud and mud and slush and mud. Thankfully, it is flat! This is my favorite part of the course. Mud really isn’t too bad; actually, I’d say its fun. I lost the lady I’d been following in this section as I stopped to walk for a minute and she kept on trucking along. I never saw her for the rest of the day. You wind your way through the valley for quite a while until you reach a Y in the trail. To the right is the final climb to the finish. To the left are the 5 or so miles of the course that I’d never ran. Okay, here we go…
The 5 miles really weren’t too bad. We had a long, but gradual climb to the next aid station. This was a bit wider, more like an old jeep road. I walked the entire uphill, as I didn’t want to waste any energy on it although it is a very runable section for people that are in shape. Once at the top it flattens out and really has a slight downhill angle for a half-mile or so until the next aid station. At this point you’re also passing people who are headed back to the single-track trails to the finish. Seeing other people and hearing a million “good job” or “you’re doing great” comments really lifted my spirits. I moved through this section pretty quickly (for me) and really wish I had my Garmin so I could’ve seen my pace. It felt like it was in the high 8’s/low 9’s, but I guess I’ll never know. Oh well. My favorite comment was from a guy that told me I was almost there, referring to the aid station and the turn-around point. I was glad to hear it. To get to the aid station 2 you have to cross a huge ditch. I lost my balance here and caught myself with one hand in the mud. Muddy hand… nice! I am proud to say that was my only "fall" of the day and I caught myself. That is unusual for me as I am normally clumsy. At the aid station I got 3 more pretzels and headed back out (to cross the ditch again!).
Aid Station 2 – 9.3 miles - 2:20. I could tell that my pace had slowed a bit, but I was still really pleased with how I was doing. I did a run/walk combo back up the slight downhill I had just cruised down. It wasn’t as much fun going the other way… At this point I passed my 2 girlfriends I normally run with. They seemed to be struggling a little, but perked up when I cheered for them and told them it was less than a half-mile to the aid station. Turning off the jeep road, it was back to single-track trails. These were downhill for the start too and I was glad. I had never run these before and made pretty good time down them as well. I even passed a few people through this section that never caught back up with me. I like that!
Somewhere through this section I wasn’t familiar with I was thinking about how awesome my time was. I couldn’t believe I was going this quickly since I only 3 miles to go from aid station 2 to the finish. WRONG! It was 5 miles! That hit me during a walk break in the middle of the woods. I loved the solitude and being able to think to myself. I kept thinking the whole day it was a 12 miles race rather than 14 miles. Why? I know the RD very well and knew a lot about this race going in. I guess its just games your mind plays on you. Anyways, I realized this and it was a very depressing moment for me. I realized I wasn’t doing super-duper awesome although I was still on track to beat my goal. So, all was good. I pressed on…
I caught up with 2 guys that were moving s-l-o-w. I stayed behind them for far too long. They were walking the entire time; even the flat sections. It was a slow walk, too! After probably close to a half mile I finally said, “do you mind if I get by” to them. I didn’t want to seem rude and that is why I waited so long to say anything. But, I was in a race… not a Sunday stroll. I wasted so much time behind them. When I think about it now I should’ve said something much sooner; I just didn’t want to seem mean. Oh well…. Moving on. I got past them and finally picked up the pace. I got back to “death trail” which is the final climb to the finish line. I knew it would be all walking. I looked at my watch for the 3rd and final time for the day (other 2 times were at the aid stations). I had exactly 20 minutes to get to the top and make my “in my dreams” goal. Oh boy! It’s a tough climb, but I thought it was doable. I knew I would walk the entire thing. I just had to keep moving. I passed a guy right at the beginning of this. He was nice enough to move over and let me by when he saw that I was going faster than him. Thank you! I trudged up that hill slowly. But, I kept moving. They had funny signs posted along the way. I remember laughing at all of them, but the only one that I remember what it said specifically was “ain’t this a b***h?” or something along those lines. Yes, it was indeed!! A big one! After about a half mile climb (maybe a little more…), death trail finally somewhat flattens out for probably less than .10 to go to the finish line. I knew I had to run to meet my goal. So I tried… and my calves started cramping like crazy! I’ve never had a pain like that before. My right one did it first and after 2-3 steps my left one joined in. OUCH! It was painful, but I still tried to “run” at that point because I knew the finish line was so close. I could hear the music and people cheering for other finishers. I said to myself, “suck it up, Kristen” and kept moving.
I crossed the finish line in 3:45:05. My goal was to finish somewhere between 3:45-4:00. Needless to say, I was thrilled! I learned that my calf cramping was from a lack of salt. Apparently 6 pretzels and only ¾ a bottle of water for the whole race wasn’t enough. I’ll learn about hydration/nutrition while running one of these days… I had a delicious piece of pizza and cookie cake after the race and hung out with my friends. I enjoyed watching my other friends finish including my 2 girlfriends who came in around 4:10:xx (still waiting on official results to be posted…). A friend was taking pictures of everyone as they crossed the finish line. If mine isn’t too horrible, I’ll post it up here. I’m not making any promises though…
Okay... The pic is so bad and made me laugh so much that I had to share. Here I am in all my glory. Please notice how muddy I am from the knee down:
I drove home long enough to take the following pics, take a 20-minute shower, and hop back in the car to go back to town for the after-party. I think I need to iron my skirt...
Some of the mud aftermath:
Next year the race is supposed to be a 25k, I’m definitely looking forward to it! A friend of mine races for team inov-8 (trail shoes if you aren’t familiar with them…). The inov-8 rep came and did this race. I don’t know him personally, but I’m thinking to be a rep for an elite trail running brand you are probably a pretty good ultrarunner. Here is his quote about the race: “Most difficult course I’ve ever raced. Only way to make the course tougher would’ve been to add elevation.” The race used to be known as the toughest half marathon in the SE. Since it is no longer a half, it doesn’t get that title anymore, but it’s still tough. My aftermath is one gnarly blister that is so bad it popped itself while running! You know what that means? Mud got in it. So, it's now brown. Sweet! I'm also a bit sore today as I didn't have the time nor the desire to take an ice bath. Yoga tonight was a bit challenging, but I feel it was helpful in my recovery.
Great race! Great volunteers! Great course! Great weather! Way toooooo long of a recap…

| | Busy day. Had to go to class and give a speech. Made a 95%! WAHOO! I am so glad that is over with. Only one more to go. Thank goodness. Hour long commute back home. Ate KFC for dinner. Yum. Planned to run with my friend (the guy that complimented my calf muscles) on a full belly... for both of us. We did it intentionally. I ran the .35 to his house and talked for a minute before we set out to make ourselves sick. I succeeded. 8:05 pace was VERY hard for me. I love that he pushes me... I'll never improve otherwise. I threw up at 1.15 distance. In his neighbors front yard. I felt bad. Disgusting. I figured it would happen though. I wanted to see how my stomach could handle eating and running. I'm pretty sure I just shattered my dreams of an ultra. Dang. Weather is great here in AL. I wore shorts and a tech shirt tonight and was sweating. I also have lots of mosquito bites already... it's too early for that! |

| | 85* when I ran... too hot! I would definitely prefer to run in the cold temps than the hot. Ran with 2 good friends, Brooke and Justin, who are both top top top local runners. Well, Justin hung with us for about .15 until we nearly got hit by a car and he said he was leaving us. Thanks! We ran very easy... especially for Brooke. I'm sure she was so bored. I definitely wasn't enjoying the heat. Made me feel sick again. My body needs to get used to it. I was glad to get in a few miles since this wasn't planned until about 4:30 today and we ran at 6:00. |

This isn't a running blog or anything, right? I did get lots of walking in on Sunday afternoon...
I hope y'all had a wonderful Easter! I had a wonderful weekend filled with family gatherings.
Here is what I wanted to share:
Sunday after church and a delicious lunch with my mom, brother, and sister-in-law, my mom and I went to the local Botanical Gardens to see the tulips, my favorite flower. We go every year around this time. Well, after the hard Alabama winter (all you Utah folks keep your comments to yourself...) the tulips were a bit late in blooming and most aren't ready yet. I bet they'll be beautiful next weekend. Moving on....
So Mom and I were a bit frustrated about the tulip situation and were walking around this large water feature/pond thing they have when Mom spotted a SNAKE in the water! We stopped and took pictures of it, etc. I thought it was cool! We pointed it out to a little boy who thought it was neat and got excited about it and got loud. Therefore lots of other people knew too. Someone "reported it to the authorities" so they sent some 16-year old volunteer kid down to the pond to "handle the situation." He and a young girl worked on trying to get the snake out of the water for at least 30 minutes. Mom and I sat on a bench and watched and laughed hysterically at the situation... he was tricky to catch! They finally caught him with a net and were trying to walk him to the woods to release him when he got out again. So they pinned him down with the net and the boy grabbed him. He was NOT a happy snake...
Snake in the water:
Snake out of the water. He looks friendly:
Oh, and a pretty flower picture just for Burt:
Happy Easter!!!
Sorry for hijacking the running blog. I just wanted to share my snake story. I did walk several miles around the Botanical Gardens if that counts for anything... |

Training group. Pretty boring. They did run a sub-10 pace so I was pretty impressed considering they are training for their first 5k. The heat in Alabama is already blistering hot... 85*. I was sucking air, to say the least. This group meets at 6pm every Monday. It's too darn hot then. I'm starting to prefer the early morning Saturday runs although I miss my sleep. Today my mom (the most wonderful mom in the whole world!!) celebrated her 26th? birthday. Happy Birthday Mom! I bought her a new living room furniture set (couch, chair, and ottoman). I can't wait for it to be delivered. That new couch has my name written all over it! Today was my first cup of coffee in 41 days. Lent. Sigh... I missed you. I limited myself to 8 cups today. It was pure coffee bliss. I hate looking at peoples FRB pages that don't have pics or don't have real pics. Although I love my Kim Possible pic, I decided I need to change it since I would greatly annoy myself if I were looking at my blog. I can't ask of others (post a pic!) if I'm not willing to do it myself. So, I'm trying to change my pic and I keep getting an error that it is too big and I need to compress it. HELP. What do I do?

| | I live in the country. In the country we don't have things called streetlights. When a girl that is scared of the dark (me) decides to run at night in the country, it doesn't always go well. I didn't run in a nearby neighborhood like I normally do on my solo runs from home (they don't happen often). I ran backroads. I didn't have any major problems. It was just plain SCARY. Thank goodness I had my headlamp, otherwise I would've had an accident when a herd of deer jumped out in front of me. Holy moly that was frightening! I screamed like a school girl. Also in the country, houses tend to be spread out. A rapist could've been hiding in the woods for all I know! I am so paranoid. I have run this route many times with my buddy Jonathan during the day. He didn't feel like running tonight and it was very dark out... Completely different scenario than I am used to! I survived without running into (no pun intended) any rapists for the night. This one goes down as a win in my book. In other news, did y'all realize that we have a famous person blogging here at FRB? Her profile says that she has 5 kids. That's a lie; she really has 19. |

today: alarm before 6am (i miss sleeping in on saturdays...) run 2 miles volunteer at local race (working finish line is stressful!) run 2 miles push-mow my entire yard (it's big and hilly. did i mention that i push-mowed it? or that it was big? or that it was hilly?) run 2 miles wash my car (fist time in probably 5 years that i've not paid someone to do it for me. now i remember why i pay people to do it. sheesh.) run 2 miles needless to say, i think i'll sleep good tonight. what a GLORIOUS day! (for you non-alabamians: temps here are in the mid-70's; sun is shining bright; not a cloud in the sky. it is a truly beautiful day.)

| | No run tonight. Didn't have time between school and a function at our local Fleet Feet store. Oh yea... I got my second stats test back........ I made an 87%!!!!! I seriously don't see how. I almost cried I was so happy. Hallelujah! I just wanted to share with y'all that determination DOES pay off. This golf ball has been a pain in my you-know-what for years. No one has ever been able to get it. I have spent hours upon hours trying to get it to land on the tee. Well, last night after playing with it for probably an hour or so, I GOT IT! I screamed, I mean screamed I was so excited. Then my hands started to shake and it almost fell off the tee. I would've cried had that happened. Literally. I know that to most of you this means absolutely nothing. It wouldn't to me if I were reading this. But, I took it as a small sign that my determination (some might say I'm a bit hard-headed) pays off sometimes. It took me years and years, hours upon hours to make my goal - getting the ball on the tee. I look at it like my running. Hopefully it will not be years until I run the elusive marathon, but I know that it will be hours upon hours upon hours of training and hard work. I just have to be as determined with my running as I was with this stupid ball. Okay, enough blabbering from me for now... just wanted to share my thoughts. Hope y'all are having a fabulous week! |

Hot. hOt. hoT. HOt. HOT. HOTTTTTTTTT. Stressful day at work; very, very stressful. Darn volcanoes. Running seemed to let me clear my mind a bit, which was nice. I ran my same scary, rapist loop from last week. This time the sun was setting though, so it wasn't dark. I saw lots of people (okay, 3 couples. that is a lot for the country) out walking. I am probably the over-friendly runner when I meet people on the street. I say hi to everyone and wave. I ran past my normal running buddy, JP's, parents. They got an even bigger hello than the others. Since it wasn't dark, I wasn't worried about potential mass-murders lurking in the woods. That was nice, as I tend to be a bit paranoid about those things typically. When I get about .60 from home I cut through the corner of a cotton field and run the edge of it behind some peoples house to the road and then turn and head for home. The people have definitely seen me running and we've said our hello's in the past, etc. Well today the man and woman were outside doing something (I think working on their car??) and their dog that I haven't seen before was in the yard. He didn't see me at first but when he did he was barking like crazy and charged at me. I stopped running and tried to walk slowly past him. If I looked at him he would back up a smidge but if I turned to start back running he came at me and barked more. Meanwhile, the people are completely ignoring his barking! This went on for at least a minute before they realized it and started yelling at him to leave me alone and come to them. THANK YOU! The man said that he was a nice dog and was "all talk," but considering he was like a pit bull looking dog, I don't know that I believe him. That breed doesn't always have the best reputation. I apologized to them when he told me that and they said it was okay. I was on the property behind their house, disturbing them so I felt bad. Anyways, I thought I'd ask more experienced runners... In the future, should I say "excuse me, can you get your dog" or something to the people when he continues to bark? Or should I do like I did tonight? That would be where my shy side comes out and I don't want to bother people or interrupt what they're doing. Hmmmmm... ******************************************************************** Worked on my pu-pu-su challenge for the first time this week while watching Project Runway and chatting with my mom. She didn't understand that I was having trouble conversing while getting a hernia, having a heart attack and trying to watch Heidi Klum critique the designers all at the same time. Sheesh. Girls trip this weekend. I wasn't really planning on running. But, when it was 6am and I had yet to go to bed (managed to last 41 hours without sleep this time) and the sunrise looked sooooooo beautiful, I couldn't resist. My view while running: Watching a beautiful sunrise over the lake while having a fabulous weekend with some of my very best friends. Can life get any better? Now, back to reality. I have a paper do at 10AM tomorrow and I haven't started it yet.

Seriously an awesome run tonight. I felt good the whole time. Ran 2 with one of the girls that I'm coaching in the 5k training program after running 2 on my own. She ran the whole time without stopping at a little over 10mm pace. I was so proud! It's fun to watch other people grow and develop as runners. I know that I am certainly still at that point and have a very long ways to go. It really motivates me to see other people reaching the goals they have set for themselves. Congrats to all you Boston runners. I enjoyed keeping up with the race online this morning and can't wait to read all of your reports! ********************************************************************* I did my pu pu su challenge tonight while getting a new air conditioner installed. (warning: long and rambling)
slow as molasses.
ran the rapist loop (more on that later) with jonathan (jp) with a little bit added in to make it a full 5k. i didn't get to stretch beforehand because he was ready to go when i got to his house. excuse me for showing up at 7:31 when i said i'd be there at 7:30. i can't help it that my speech class ran late because we got in an argument about corparal punishment. sheesh. anyways, my calves were hurting as they didn't get stretched. i tend to think that stretching is overrated and don't really do much of it at all. calves is the one thing that i try to get very quickly though... stupid, kp. i know for next time. i didn't stop and stretch them during the run. i figured if i couldn't tough it out for 3 miles, i have no business being out there. i was super slow but really picked it up the last .20 or so (in preparation for my dual with RAD). i was at a 7:20ish pace for that and was pleased. this loop has one nice downhill section that i somehow manage to run better than jp every time. his long legs must slow him down??? because the rest of the time he is literally running circles around me (he'll run ahead and then run back to me and run a circle around me and then run back ahead. jerk.) we saw the biggest dog i've ever seen in my life on the run tonight. this thing was massive! i seriously wanted to stop and play with him. he seemed like a sweetie. thankfully, jp's lab, polo, didn't run with us tonight like he normally does. he doesn't wear a leash and is quite hyper... those two would've been interesting. oh yea, and we saw a coyote... i'm glad jp was there, otherwise i would have freaked!
okay... the "rapist" loop:
first of all, i didn't see the mean dog that barked at me last time. we ran through the same cotton field, so i guess he must've been in the house. jp said he has come across him before too... not a nice dog. moving on - so i was telling jp about how i ran our loop by myself the other night at like 8:30pm. it was definitely pitch black out other than my bobbing headlamp. he absolutely could not believe i ran that alone at night... he doesn't even do that! and, when he runs it alone during the day he always carries a pocket knife with him! i don't even own a pocket knife!!! please understand that this is not a bad area in any way. it is just in the country and one section of it is very secluded - no houses or street lights and it is heavily wooded on both sides of the road. he was telling me that i definitely shouldn't run the loop alone at night, which i agree with. but, i think it is still okay during the day. jp was telling me about how he had seen trucks parked up there before doing who knows what (drug deals, killing people, i don't want to know...) so that is why he was apprehensive of me being up there alone. he was running probably 30 or 40 feet in front of me when he suddenly turned around and ran back to me and then ran beside me the whole time. there was a car on the secluded street! (insert dramatic music here...) i thought it was very nice of him to be all protective of me; what a gentleman. i told him that it was probably just some teenagers "parking" which then made him tell me a story about when he dated my good friend in high school and they went "parking" up there... ugh, i didn't want to know that! anyways, nothing happened with the car. i couldn't even see anyone in there although the sun was quickly setting and it was pretty much impossible to see anything at that point. we made it home safe and sound. he did manage to make me very nervous about running up there though. thanks a lot...
so now i need to buy pepper spray and a pocket knife. this stuff is going to weigh me down y'all!
that's my story and i'm sticking to it.

Didn't run a single step this weekend which was kinda depressing. I was out of town visiting with friends and was just too busy.
Friday - Fight traffic heading south for 2+ hours. A lot of idiots were headed to Talladega. Eat a yummy dinner.
Saturday - I had planned to do a little 5k, but it was canceled due to the torrential rains. I think that was a smart move. That was the heaviest rain we've had in a very long time. We went shopping instead. Yummy breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Sunday - Went to a true "Southern Baptist" church with my friend. I attend a Southern Baptist church at home, but it is nothing like this. Honestly, it was like a culture shock. But, I really did enjoy it and we had a great message in Sunday school and the regular service. Yummy lunch. Left Birmingham later than planned so I missed yoga at home. No biggie; my prolonged visit was worth it.

AM: My first sub-6am run EVER. I didn't get to run any this weekend as I was so busy so I thought I'd give this early morning thing a try. Shhhhh... Don't tell anyone, but I kinda liked it!
I had a goal of being in bed at 8pm because I was a) exhausted from a fantastic weekend out of town and b) a little apprehensive about this 5am crap and didn't know how it would go. At 10:30ish I finally crawled in the bed but was wide awake, as I had just finished my pu, pu, su challenge and my heart was pounding.
5:05am alarm went off. I stayed in bed for just a minute or two and then hopped up and got ready to go. I was out the door by 5:12 wearing shorts, a s/s tech shirt with a l/s tech shirt over it. My horses were surprised to see me this early and let it be known that they wanted to go for a run too. Sorry guys!
I didn't run the rapist loop because it was dark outside. (no, i haven't bought any pepper spray yet) Although, I feel it would be safer to do at 5am than at 9pm. I stuck to the neighborhood route that I have grown to despise as it can be quite boring. Honestly, this was the most enjoyable the neighborhood loop has ever been. I loved getting to watch the sky lighten as the sun prepared to rise over the nearby mountains. The temps were absolutely perfect. I tied my l/s shirt around my waist around mile 2. I could've gone the whole run without it, but I'm glad I had it on at the beginning as it was quite windy this morning and it took me a moment to warm up. I didn't take my iPod with me; it was just me and the birds singing and the crickets chirping. Lovely.
I didn't hear nor see a single dog. I saw no fellow crazy people out exercising. I only passed about 5 cars and it was towards the end of the run. I enjoyed having the roads to myself and actually getting to hear the sounds of my shoes hitting the pavement. It was refreshing and just what I needed on this wonderful Monday morning. I ran the entire time which is pretty much unheard of for me when I run alone. I always stop to walk for a minute or tie my shoe or look at something or stretch this or that. This is quite an accomplishment for me!
After my run, I sat outside on the back porch a few minutes cooling off. Then I took a shower and went back to bed for 30 minutes until I had to get up for work. The 30 minute "nap" was fantastic! PM: After work and before my training group I ran 2 miles at 8:54 pace. I didn't know I could hold a sub 10 pace! Exciting! I ran .50 of it at 7:30 pace (3rd out of 4 laps on a .50 parking lot). I'm even more excited because I ran a 5k this morning so my legs were not really fresh. Training group ran 3 miles. I ran with 2 girls who held a 10:10 pace the whole time. I was so proud of them! They definitely dragged me along as I was tired. I figured that I could NOT stop and walk for a minute since I am a "coach" and all. I'm glad I got in all those miles today. Good day for KP. I think I might "officially" start a marathon training plan. YIKES. The one I found is "easy" and 18 weeks long and for beginners. We shall see if I stick with it in the HOT Alabama summer. It has 4 runs per week which is more than I normally do. Like I said, we shall see. I might just stick to running a few miles here and there like I have been. I'm nervous to officially start a training plan. If I don't make it, I will be so upset with myself.

I had every intention of getting up at 5am again this morning and getting in my 3 miles. When the alarm went off, I knew that wasn't happening. It was COLD outside. I'm talking in the high 30's in Alabama in late April... what is going on? My bed was entirely too comfortable and too warm for me to do something crazy like give up an additional hour of sleep.
I ran around my work campus at lunch. I thought it would still be cold, so I brought shorts and a l/s tech shirt to wear with a workout tank to go underneath it. Well, it's like an absolutely beautiful perfect wonderful 70 degree afternoon now. What is up with this weather? I was dying the moment I stepped outside, so when I got away from the main part of campus I took off the l/s shirt and tied it around my waist. That felt much better! I was really dragging and my hip was hurting me today. Argh. I wanted to run 3 but got back to my starting point at 2.46 and decided to just make it an even 2.5 and I'd be happy.
I am on a lose-10-pounds-before-vacation-next-month-diet. I did pretty well with it last week (my first week). I sucked horribly over the weekend. I ate anything and everything in sight. Now I am doing better about my meals but have had a major sweet tooth; I had THREE cupcakes yesterday! Anyways, I weighed myself today... I've lost 2 lbs. Whoop! Whoop! Now I just need that other 8 to drop magically.
I was also going to attempt to do a pull-up for the first time today for the little challenge some of us are doing. I had every intention of trying. Well, when I got back from running, there were like 5 guys over in the pull-up area working out. They were lifting weights and being serious body-builder guys. So, I decided that I didn't want to embarrass myself and just took another 0 for the pull-up portion. I know, I suck. |

| | Slow. HOT. Ran the Railroad Track Trail with Jonathan. I asked him last night if he had any trail shoes. He said no. I told him to run in old tennis shoes. He said he would "figure something out," so I left it at that. I got to his house today and he is running in his vibram five fingers. I realize that people run in these all the time. But, they generally start out with like a mile at a time and build up to higher mileage. He had never run a single step in them and had only bought them for a mission trip to Nicaragua last fall. His feet were killing him; can't wait to see how they feel tomorrow. He ran 5.4 while I ran 6.5. It was 80 degrees out. Whew... and humid! And, the bugs were out in full force. Did you know that the mosquito is the state bird of Alabama? I'm glad to have this one over with. I am not a fan of the heat. Can we go back to 50 degree days, pretty please? After my run I saw this little guy. Yep, I definitely need to buy some pepper spray. Although he was nice, not all dogs are. A mean dog his size could literally kill me. He was just walking down the middle of the road on a route that I really plan to run when I start upping my mileage some. He was HUGE. A total sweetie too. I love big dogs. Love 'em! | | 10 HOURS OF SLEEP! Hallelujah! I tend to sleep.... ummmm... not much at all. 5 hours is really good for me. I've been trying to do better lately, but I still don't sleep much. I just stare at the ceiling. Being un-motivated to work on school work for finals week and not allowing myself to go out due to finals deadlines meant that I got in the bed early. Since I ran 6 last night I slept in too and skipped my 6AM running group. It was oh-so-lovely. (note: I used to complain about my 7AM running group on Saturday mornings. It is now moved to 6AM for the hot summer months to avoid some of the heat. Oh my. Dear 7AM, I miss you...) Basically, a crappy run. I was very unmotivated. I cut it short because I was running a little late for a Waffle House date with my wonderful mother. I think we can all agree on which is more important on the running vs. Waffle House debate. Duh, it is obviously Waffle House. Wise choice, KP. It was delicious. I'm pretty sure I consumed about 1500 more calories than I had just burned running. |

Ran 2 at 8:37 pace by myself. Stopped at 1 mile and stretched as my hamstrings were KILLING me. I went to yoga last night for the first time in 3 weeks and boy was I feeling it today! Yoga is such a good workout. I was quivering and sweating last night. She worked us hard. Ran 3 at 10:50 pace with my 5k training group. I was pretty tired but pushed the pace with them a bit as we were the 11-12 min group tonight. One of my favorite girls asked me if I was trying to kill her. Maybe. She stuck with me the whole time though... which means she CAN do it! I was proud! My right foot (and only my right one; so weird) was completely numb during my last 3 miles. I wish I could figure out why this numbness is happening. It is very irritating. HOT HOT HOT out and oh-so-humid. It was 80* the whole time and I'd say about 3,408% humidity. Sheesh! Oh yea... I've been meaning to put this on here for a week now. I met a fellow blogger! A recent Boston runner. Jim F and I work for the same company. I work at the headquarters in AL and he works remotely from Indiana. He is a traveling fool and was at our headquarters in Huntsville last week and stopped by to say hello. I thought that was so nice of him! He was a very nice guy and encouraged me in my running for the few minutes we talked. Thanks for stopping by Jim! Sorry I don't have any photographic evidence, Burt...

| | I needed some stress relief from finals. 3 down; 1 to go. Then, a MUCH needed 20-day break from school before my summer semester starts. Thank goodness! Ran the Rapist Loop with Jonathan well after dark. We started about 9PM; right after I got home from taking 2 finals for the night. I told him I was going to take it easy tonight, and I did. AP: 10:13. We normally go to the left on the loop and climb a small hill right off and then have a gradual climb throughout the loop until we get to the big downhill that I love. Tonight I told him I wanted to go right and climb the big hill. I was determined not to walk any on this run, and I didn't! I looked at my watch once we got to the top of the big hill climb and my pace was 12:30ish (pitiful) and we were only .92 into the run. I thought I would die right then and there. My legs were burning. I kept on trucking though. Slow and steady. I'm glad that is over with. I need to do it more often. The hill keeps on going for a while up this mountain. If I ever get serious about my running, it would be perfect for me to do some hill work on. It is exactly 1 mile from the top of my driveway to the base of the mountain. I would get some good uphill and downhill practice if I did that. I might have to try that... sounds kinda fun! We got back to Jonathan's and stretched for a minute. I told him I was going to go out on his road and run a bit more to get in a full 5k (still a pitiful distance). I felt pretty good and wasn't pleased with my measly mileage. I was putting my headlamp back on and realized it was broke! The part that tightens must've fallen off or something; not real sure... He and I searched high and low for the missing piece although we didn't know exactly what we were looking for. We never found it and I was not a happy camper. Needless to say, I was mad and didn't go out and run more. I feel like a slacker now. Oh well. Last night I got my paint on. This is supposed to be a Monet. The HORRIBLE finished product: |

So last week I ordered a bike from the local bike store. I picked it up and got sized for it on Thursday and took it out for it's first spin on Friday. I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to go off-roading on a road bike. Oh well, I cut through a cotton field at my work on Friday to ride in a local neighborhood. It was pretty bumpy. I have some friends that run the 'hood from work, but I'm not fast enough to get any decent mileage in on my 1-hour lunch break while running, so I had never explored the 'hood. Riding was a different story. 7.6 miles in 36 minutes. I know that isn't fast. But, I'm still learning my bike for one thing and I was just aimlessly meandering around the neighborhoods. I'll improve, I'm sure. It was HOT out. I enjoyed the ride quite a bit. I bought it as a means to cross-train, but I think I might enter a local sprint-tri this summer just for fun. We'll see. (Ignore the yellow seat. I am trying out different ones to find the right "fit" for me.) This morning my alarm went off at 5:05 and I got ready to drive to downtown to run a training run on the Cotton Row Run 10k course at 6AM. The actual race is Memorial Day. I had little sleep and a HUGE dinner the night before at the Melting Pot (yum!) so I was worried about stomach issues; thankfully, no problems! I have done the 5k course, but never the 10k. I've always heard about a killer hill that is right in the middle of the course and it did not disappoint. I was determined to run the whole time until I at least got to the top of the hill. That would be right at a 5k. I was slow and was about ready to cut my legs off the first 3 miles. It sucked. I got to the hill which sucked even more. I made it 3/4+ of the way up and then walked the rest (I'd say about .10 of a mile). When I got to the top, I stopped for less than a minute and stretched a little. Then, I was off again! I ran the entire way back down the mountain and into downtown. Climbing that hill sucked, but cruising back down that nice, gradual downhill was so worth it. I felt better for the last 4 than the first 3. I ran the entire time and even extended my run out from 6.1 to an even 7 miles. It was slow. Super slow (AP: 10:54), but I am still really pleased with my no walking breaks (besides the top of that darn hill...). This is by far my best run ever as far as no-walking. I'm thrilled. The temps were absolutely wonderful at 65ish degrees. Getting up early was worth the nice temps. After running, I went to the local Botanical Gardens to plant flowers for the Garden of Hope. It is a portion of the BG that my company sponsors fully by paying for it and maintaing it and buying the flowers, etc. Twice a year they select 3 cancer patients and spotlight them and their story. They get to design the garden (3 separate ones) how they want it. My boss has been in it before. This year another one of my co-workers was honored. It really is a moving experience and I am glad to be a part of it twice a year. This little girl, Sydney, age 6, was one of the participants this year too. She has had some sort of eye cancer. Her information plaque told me exactly what it was, but it was about 47 letters long and I couldn't even pronounce it. She was absolutely adorable and was so sweet when I asked her if I could take her picture. Planting flowers is tough. My back and knees hurt now! I am known to have a bit of a black thumb too... at home anyways. Flowers are a lost cause here. Sweet Sydney. I love those freckles. Needless to say, it is not even noon and I've had a fantastic day. Sorry this is so long!!! Happy Mothers Day to all you wonderful Mama's out there. I hope y'all have a wonderful weekend with your families!! Update: After doing a bit of last minute homework, I went out for a quick bike ride around the 'hood. 5.6 miles. It is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL day outside; could not ask for better weather. It actually feels like Spring! So, quick question bike people: When biking are you supposed to go with the flow of traffic or against the traffic like when running? Also, when you are turning and cars are around, do you do those fancy signal things that I have no idea what they are? Like sticking your arm up or out or something? Thanks! Now, time for a nap before more homework. Yippee!

| | Cooked breakfast for my wonderful mama this morning! Ran 2.2 miles with the guy that got me into running in the first place, Eric. He is a good buddy, and unfortunately we don't ever run together because he is way toooooooo speedy for me. This was his first run since completing 171 miles earlier in the week running the entire Pinhoti trail in the state of Alabama. Another local runner ran the entire trail, Alabama to Georgia (335 miles), this past week too. They were trying to set "fastest known time" records for the trail and succeeded! They are so inspiring. Anyways, Eric was burdened with some major foot problems during the run so he took today nice and easy. It was nice to chat with him and hear stories about his week in the woods and just catch up on life. I'd say our pace was about 9:15. I didn't take my watch. Immediately following running, I went to an hour of yoga. It was much harder to do after running. She worked us very hard tonight. I enjoyed it in an "I hate you" kinda way. Then, a late movie with my mom, brother, and sister-in-law for Mother's Day. We saw "The Last Song" with Miley Cyrus. I do not recommend it to anyone with a brain. Your kids will probably enjoy it if they like Hannah Montana. I, personally, have never seen the show and am now thanking my lucky stars for that blessing. I hope that all you mama's had a wonderful Mother's Day!!! We came home and had a cake that I decorated at 11:45 to end the day right. Perfect! |

I really don't even know if I slept at all last night, but I did lay in bed and stare at the clock for about 4 hours. I had a lot on my mind and simply could not get my brain to shut down. Had training group again tonight. I ran 1 mile prior to our group run. I wanted to see how fast I could go. 1 mile - 7:53 pace. I was pretty excited that I went sub-8. Now, I just need to hold that pace for 26.2 miles. Yea right! Keep dreaming, KP. I felt exhausted after that. Ran 3.1 with training group at a 10:30 pace on the dot. Run felt easy. Carried on a conversation the whole time and thoroughly enjoyed the unseasonably cool temps we had today; highs in the 50's!!!! I am soooooo proud of these ladies that are training for their first 5k. I feel like a Mama to them (except for the fact that half of them are older than my Mama!). I guess it is kinda what a teacher feels like; very rewarding to see them succeed. I love watching and helping them reach their goals and beyond. Then, played a VERY intense round of hide-n-seek with my 2 favorite kiddos. At ages 5 and 6, they are quite the little cheaters and they got their dad involved too! Ugh... I don't like to lose. Anyways, I was definitely breathing harder from that 10-15 minutes of play time then I did during my entire 3 mile run tonight. Sheesh.

Fell asleep about 2AM this morning watching a movie ("The Bounty Hunter" - Kinda cute. Good date movie. I've seen some crappy movies lately, so I'd give this one 3.75 stars) and was up staring at the ceiling at 5AM. I would've gotten up and ran but I was comfy and frustrated and I knew I had a bit of an adventure tonight.
Jonathan wanted to do a duathlon with biking and running tonight and I was up for the challenge! My only concern was the roads. We may live in the country, but the route we were going to take put us on a VERY busy road for about a mile. This is the very road (not the same spot, thankfully) that his sister died in a car crash on when we were all 3 in high school. Therefore, riding a bike on it made me a bit apprehensive. I got a lecture from my mom (not happy about our route), he got a lecture from his mom (definitely not happy about our route) and we got a lecture from me (nervous about our route). All was well on the bike ride for the most part. Starting off, about a mile into the ride, Jonathan ran over a freshly killed raccoon! He did not see it and almost fell off his bike. I nearly fell off mine laughing so hard. The busy road was, well, busy. It really has no shoulder for riders (especially those of us on road bikes) so I was trying to stick to the edge as best I could. I'm pretty sure I nearly got hit about 107 times... but, who's counting? We finally turn off that road and onto a not-as-busy-rolling-hill-country-road. This road is still busier than I would've liked (I prefer zero traffic) and I was thisclose to being hit by an 18-wheeler. I was cruising along quite well and was a few hundred feet in front of Jonathan, as he was on a mountain bike (I have a new love for road bikes after tonight!), when I heard a car coming up behind me FAST. I could see that another car was coming in the other direction and that this big loud thing behind me was quickly approaching. So I whipped over to the side of the road (gravel, broken glass, rough terrain - oh so good for a road bike) and then fell down into a ditch all to get away from an 18-wheeler! Scary! He slowed down about the time I fell in the quite large ditch and Jonathan chased him down and possibly told him he was #1... I don't know, I was just telling myself not to cry at that point and didn't even really pay attention to what he was doing. I got back on my bike and peddled the rest of the way to our stopping point. We turned onto a very country road for the last 4 or so miles and we rode at a nice leisurely pace side-by-side and chatted the whole time. It was nice since we didn't really get to talk much during most of the ride due to the fact that I was almost being killed. We did 10.3 miles total biking. I did pass one of my very favorite spots after the near-death experience. This is where I put in to kayak during the summer. Love it!
Flint River
We parked our bikes, walked the 100 or so feet to the start of our run and took off. It was hot (85* when we started at 6:30PM) and humid (I'd say at least 1,438%). My calves were cramping so I stopped and stretched them about .30 into the run for just a second. Jonathan took off and added a bit extra to his run. On my way back I was very worried about him as I thought I should be able to see him if he ran to where I thought he had (he didn't) so I walked about .20 waiting to see him come into sight. He never did. After the blissful walk break I ran the rest of the route to make it an even 3.1. I then immediately started walking back down the course to look for my buddy! Can you imagine me having to tell his mom that he was hit by a car while we were running? That really is all I kept thinking about the last bit of my run. Thankfully as I crested the top of my hill, he was cresting the top of his hill, about .25 from the finish. (Did I mention that this was a very rolling hill type course that sucked after biking). I sprinted the last .10 with him to the finish. He still beat me after I had a couple minute break. Dangit. It was a pretty close battle though.
Yep, the reflectors on my bike work.
Wow - I am smiling way too hard. That is the look of happiness due to being done. From this little jaunt today, I got my first major allergy attack of the year. I've been very fortunate thus far... until today. This one is a doozie. My eyes were swelling shut. Darn pollen. Argh... |

Co-RD'd this with Jonathan. We held a little race at his house this morning that ran our normal rapist loop. 11 fast people showed up and me.
Set a new PR. Yes, I realize that I'm still incredibly slow. I would've liked for it to have been faster... I've ran much faster on training runs. Unfortunately, this is a very tough course with rolling hills throughout and one huge hill about .75 into it. I did manage to come in LAST place though. Yay me!
Went to my lovely sister-in-laws graduation this afternoon. It was quite an emotional day, as she just graduated from UAH, the school that had the faculty shooting in February. I am so proud of her! |

Planned to run 8 early Sunday morning before church. Well, my alarm went off at 5:05AM and I heard rain outside so I turned it off and fell back to sleep. Great decision, KP.
Nice cool day today! About 80* when I started! I was thankful. The heat and humidity didn't seem as bad tonight and I was very happy about that.
Ran 3.6 over the hill from Fleet Feet to the intersection of Airport and Whitesburg. That is a descent little hill for a non-hill runner like myself. Yes, I walked a small portion of the hill. It got steep. Run was at a 10 min pace. I wanted to walk on the way back (after cruising down the hill) and just kept saying over and over in my head "marathon, marathon, marathon" and that kept me going. Anyone know of an all downhill marathon? I seriously think I could do that. My legs would be trashed. Downhill doesn't bother me like uphill does though.
Saw this guy:
Is he a snapping turtle? This cell phone pic doesn't really show the details, but he had large claws and didn't really look like a normal pond turtle. By the way, he was nowhere near water... I'd say a good mile or so from the nearest little pond.
Ran 3.5 with training group on the Greenway. Slow and easy pace.
After training group I played on my bike for 40 minutes - 8.6 miles. I tried out a friend of mine's shoes/clips. I didn't really want clips for my bike because I'm really clumsy but after playing with hers for a while tonight, I'm thinking that maybe they aren't so bad. We took the 4.3 miles out super easy and the 4.3 back at a quick pace. I swallowed two bugs and thought I was going to gag. One got lodged in the back of my throat. Disgusting.
Did I utter the words to my bike-mate tonight, "I want to do a century someday" referring to a 100-mile bike ride. Why? It hurts for me to do 10 miles. I have toooooooo many dreams/goals/aspirations.
On my second run, I could feel my IT band tighten up a bit. Arghhhhhh.... I went home and rolled it. I haven't been as diligent about that as I should be lately. I am also now taking my roller on vacation. Wow. Can you say dork? I'll be out of town for the rest of the week. I'll be surprised if I get in any running simply because my body will ache from walking 10 miles every day in flip flops. I can't imagine that I'll want to drag myself out of bed any earlier than necessary to go run. We'll see. I did pack running clothes in hopes of getting something done. |

Blogging live from our nation's capital. After a 10-hour ride through the rolling hills of Georgia, Tennennesse, and Virginia today and a 4-hour drive from Huntsville to Atlanta last night, my back and hips were aching terribly. Oh, and I had to share a bed with my mom.... not a restful night whatsoever. I really don't think I slept at all. I ran 3.5 on the treadmill on a full stomach. It wasn't the most pleasent experience, but I'm glad to have it over with and have gotten a few miles in. Lots of walking to come for the rest of the week and hopefully a bit more running... Highlight of the trip so far would be our $126 welcome to the great state of Virginia: You can tell that this is a total girls trip and that we're having a good time when we take a picture of the officer giving us a ticket while laughing hysterically...

Slept a little last night with the help of drugs. Thank you Tylenol PM. We walked about 8 miles today. Another great day in Washington DC. I see runners EVERYWHERE in this town. I have had the "itch" to run everyday because all these other people are out doing something that is so fun. It has made me jealous. Today I wore tennis shoes to do our tourist thing rather than flip flops. First thing this morning I had to run from the train station to the Washington Monument. We had tickets to go up at 9:30 and we had train delays this morning due to "scheduled maintenance" on the tracks. We got off the train with about 5 minutes to spare. I had to run up to the monument to secure our spot in line and the girls I was with met me there when they caught up. I'd say that was probably about .75 and I ran it pretty quickly (for me) and even illigeally crossed a street, which I had never done. After going to the Smithsonian we ate lunch at a park bench at the National Mall. I got a BBQ sandwich. It was okay, but definitely not like the BBQ back home. After eating, I told my mom I was going to run the mall. Running on a full stomach sucked. Seeing all the runners out was driving me crazy... I wanted to participate. I had on street clothes which was.... fun. I didn't have my watch with me, but from mapmyrun.com figured out I ran about 1.75 miles. I finished in 15:19, which is a quick pace for me. I crossed 4 more roads illigeally on this run too! Geeze... what has gotten into me? Here are some horrible pics my mom snapped: Getting ready to go. Please look at those shorts. I have a new appreciation for proper running attire. Mom was more focused on getting the Capital building than me. Enjoying a drink after the run. I didn't have any water, so this Pepsi had to do.

| | Sunday I played tennis with one of the girls on my trip to DC. She lives in Atlanta and is a super-awesome tennis player. I played in high school and then didn't touch a racquet for about 4 years until I played again last year. It's been about a year again of no play. I don't have the time with working full time and going to school full time and trying to run some to squeeze in a tennis league too. I got my butt kicked. It was an awesome workout though. Needless to say, my entire upper body, from my butt up aches. I guess those are all the muscles I don't use while running. I was wondering why my abs hurt so much and then it dawned on me that I had played a tough tennis match. Yesterday I arrived home after about 13.5 hours in the car. It was a long drive home, but worth it. What an amazing trip! We got home around 6PM so I still had plenty of daylight to go play. I thought I would ride my neighborhood bike loop and then maybe run a few miles just to stretch out my legs. Well, I was about 3 miles from home when my bike got a flat tire. I was so pissed. UGH. That was a long and frustrating walk home. I even cried while walking down the road I was soooooooo mad. Stupid bike. I took it today and got the tire fixed. Argh. Anyways, I was so frustrated that I did not run. Instead, I went to Arby's and got a milkshake. Ran with the 10k training group tonight. I would like to help coach them too, but I normally have classes on Tuesday nights (when they meet) so that wouldn't work. This is my last week of summer break and I am enjoying it fully. This group is tapering for the 10k race they are running this weekend, so it was only about 2.5 miles. I ran a 9:30 pace. I was pleased with that. The heat was about 90* when we started, but the humidity didn't seem as bad today. It really was a good run. I had a nice chat with some of my favorite people. I love that! |

| | Biked about 5.5 miles with Jonathan in the pouring down rain. We had planned to go longer, but were both freezing. It was dark. We were cold. It started lightning. So we pushed hard for the last 3.0 (I put my bike on it's hardest level - not sure what he did) and called it a night. We would've gone farther but he had to stop and talk to a neighbor which wasted a good 20 minutes. Can you hear the positivity in my voice? It was still fun. Sometimes I love the rain, it cleanses you. I should've ran rather than rode. Oh well. |

Ran on the mountain today. This is my absolute favorite loop to run on the roads in town. Unfortunately, I don't get to run here much. My group meets here every Thursday, and that is when I normally have school. I start back next week, so that means I made it only once over my "summer break" that lasted all of 2.5 weeks. Super duper hot and humid. My car said 91* when I got out of it at 5:30. It is cooler on the mountain than it is in town too. I took it nice and slow and chatted with my friend Laura. AP - 10:30 Another girl that I run with is leaving for vacation tomorrow. Guess where she is going? Salt Lake City! I'm just a bit jealous! I want to come to SLC and meet all of y'all! I got home and decided to cook a Mississippi Mud Pie. Well, after literally catching the oven on fire, I got things under control and cooked away. It looks yummy... I haven't had any yet. I made the mistake of starting something at about 9PM that has to cool for hours when it comes out of the oven before you can do the next step. Ugh. I guess it will be a nice Friday treat when I get home from work tomorrow. |

Got up at 4:30 to meet a friend in town to run the Cotton Row 5k course at 5:20. We missed a turn somewhere and ended up only doing 2.4 miles. Oh well. Quick pace.
Then ran the Cotton Row 10k course with my buddies at 6am. We had a blast just chatting and running and making bathroom stops at construction sites! Slow pace. Enjoyable though.
Went to an auction for the rest of the day. I love antiques! I'm generally about the only person under the age of 60 at these things which is always entertaining. |

Ran the Cotton Row 5k this morning with a girl in my training group. I pushed her pretty hard and we finished in 38:15. She was thrilled. She had told her family that she thought she would finish in 45:00. It was slow, but so humid out that I was honestly glad when she wanted a walk break.
Ran the 1-mile fun run with my buddy, Bret, and his 5-year old son, Morgan. Morgan has never even done a lap around the local track and still managed to do an 11-minute mile. If you've ever ran with an excited child, you know that they zig-zag all over the place. I bet he ran 1.25 and wasted a TON of energy while Bret and I just ran straight. He fell and scraped his knee up about halfway through but hopped right back up and kept on running with blood streaming down his leg. I knew I loved this kid for a reason! He's tough! He got a ribbon for finishing and was sooooooooo excited about it. He was showing it to everyone. Do I have a budding runner on my hands? I can only hope...
Ran .75 to the pool as fast as I could. 7:40 pace.
Played for 4 hours in the sunshine with a 5 and 7 year old. They will flat wear you out. During the 10-minute rest breaks I tried to swim a few laps. That was HARD! I did 200 meters in 25 meter lengths, 3-3-2. Each lap took between 30-35 seconds. I was pushing as hard as I could. I am a slow swimmer, obviously. That was exhausting. Triathletes are officially nuts!
Ran .75 back home from the pool when I was completely exhausted. 8:35 pace.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day! |

Happy National Running Day!
Although I didn't have much time in my schedule to squeeze in a run, I knew I wanted to participate in National Running Day. So, I ran 1 mile fast to the pool in 7:39. This was on a full belly too. I had literally just eaten dinner and walked out the door. Blah. I probably could've been 10 or so seconds faster as I slowed down at the beginning to let my buddy catch up but then I ended up leaving him again because I wanted to run hard.
Played at the pool for 2 hours and then had an obligatory ice cream sandwich as I was leaving. Ran a nice, easy, conversational pace (9:12) home with my buddy after devouring the ice cream.
Good day!
More importantly, Friday is National Donut Day. If ever a food deserved a national day, it's the doughnut. Krispy Kreme (my closest donut place) is giving away free donuts! |

Worst 5k time ever! Yippee! I ran it nice and slow with some friends.
My official time was 37:13. My goodness! If that isn't pathetic, I don't know what is. Oh well... it was fun!
Ran the Eurocross 5k race here in Huntsville. It's a tough course, and definitely not a place to set a PR (or anywhere near one). The race is a 1k loop that you run 5 times. (Did all you mathematicians figure that one out?) Each loop has 2 deep creek crossings, 1 short but steep hill, and a little jaunt through the woods. Oh, and you have to jump over multiple hay bales that are lined up next to each other throughout the course. It was a fun race.... probably the most fun I've ever had in a 5k. The creek was by far the most enjoyable part. You basically just jump into water that was like waist deep for the most part. Holes seemed to pop up out of nowhere and I often fell down to my shoulders. Thankfully, my head never went under. (Although, it probably would've felt good, as it was so hot and muggy.) We had rain every day last week, so the creek was up higher than normal. You had to crawl out of each creek crossing on your hands and knees which made for a nice, muddy run.
Just a note on how hot it was: They have an 8k race too (that I had thought about running but in the end decided to be lazy) and the girl that was winning it passed out from heat exhaustion with about .50 left in the race. She was taken to the hospital by an ambulance.
I spent the rest of the day at the pool. 6 hours of fun in the sun is exhausting! I was determined to swim 400 meters, as that is the distance of our local sprint tri's swim portion. I did it in 12:48 and thought I might die. Swimming is tough! I was glad I finished though. I also learned how to do a back dive which was awesome. I think the boy that taught me was about 6 years old. Annnnnnnnddddddd, I did a front flip off the diving board for the first time in years! It was fun! It is going to be a GOOD summer!
This is by far my most rambling post ever. Just ignore me. Here is a pic of my falling in the water: I'm the one on the right in the white shirt. For some reason, the water seemed much deeper than what the woman in red is walking in. There really were some pretty deep holes, but my brain must've been exadurating when I retold the story to y'all. Still the best 5k ever!

Went to speed work last night. This has been going on for about 6 weeks at Fleet Feet, but I haven't been able to attend because of my training group. That is over (yay!) until August when the next one starts up. I thought this might do me some good. Boy oh boy! I've never really done anything more than straights and curves on a track (and it was more in a "joking" manner with my friends), so this was much harder than I anticipated.
Ran .70 over to the park for warm-up - 9:39 pace.
Kyle, our "coach" (really he is a FF employee, but he knows his stuff) told us to run about 5 seconds off of our "goal pace". We were supposed to do 10-400's with a 1:40 jogging break in the middle. Since I hadn't been to one of these before, I had no clue what he was talking about. I think he will do an analysis of me next week (if I go back!) where he makes me run a mile as fast as I can or something like that. He didn't do it last night because he had another one-time training group on proper running form. The sad thing is, I could probably benefit from that program too. Anyways, I said I'd just stick to the back with the slowest people, but I ended up leaving them because they were too slow. I ran towards the middle-back of group 3 of 4. I ran a hard-comfortable pace and didn't look at my watch at all during it.
Here are my splits. Slow, slow, slow, slow, slow.
1:45 (1:40) 1:55 (1:40) 2:00 (1:40) 2:07 (1:40) 2:02 (1:40)
3 minute break
2:06 (1:40) 2:09 (1:40) 2:07 (1:40) 2:11 (1:40) 1:49 (1:40)
I think one of the "advantages" of having a Garmin is so that you can look at it while you run to know if you are hitting your desired pace or not. I didn't look at mine a single time during the run, just got all the splits when it was over. This was all effort based. I don't even know what pace these are (approx??). Is there a way to figure that out?
This was a hard workout for me. The temp was hovering right at 90* and the humidity was high. We were out in the open with no shade to block the blistering sun. I definitely whined a little during it, but I do think I'll be back. When it was all said and done, I had "fun".
We took a shortcut back to FF through a creek and the girl right in front of me stepped on a snake! ICK!
Today (Tuesday) my mama/best friend/buddy/pal/partner-in-crime leaves for Colorado for a week! To say that I'm a bit jealous would be an understatement. I'm pretty sure this is the first time she has ever left Huntsville, AL without me at her side. I'm not a happy camper. I know she'll have a good time, but I wanna gooooo toooooooooooo. Wahhhhh... Anyways, I'll tell her to wave hello to Carolyn, Michelle, and Nan as she passes over!

3.5 – 4.0 miles. Not one of us wore a watch. Who cares about time or speed or distance? (Says the slow girl that can’t run a more than .50 without crying...)
Dear Monte Sano Trails,
Thank you for reminding me why I love running. Thank you for bringing together some of my closest friends to do something we love, if only for a short time. The run couldn’t have been any more perfect. Running the trails in a torrential downpour is just what I needed after a stressful couple of weeks. It cleansed my soul. It soaked my skin (oh wait, that was just the humidity). It got me muddy. It was FUN! The humidity had to be no less that 3,792%, but I’m not even going to complain about it, I had such a good time. Trails, I love you so. Why do I cheat on you so much with the roads? Why? I vow to (hopefully) visit you at least once a week for the entire summer. This affair with the roads (and not a good one, I might add…) needs to end. You have caught me when I’ve fallen (literally… I’ve tripped many times). You’re much more cushy and absorbent than that stinkin’ asphalt (that I’ve also taken a bloody spill or two on). You are always there for me. I need to show you some respect and come visit. I’m sorry, trails.
I've missed you my dear friend.
XOXO,
KP
P.S. Please let me be this happy after my trail half on Saturday. Please

Xterra 21k Trail Run 03:01:01, Place in age division: 3
Had I written this report Saturday after the race, it probably would've been filled with negative comments and thoughts. I struggled big time, but lets start from the beginning. I drove 2 hours south, to Birmingham, Friday after work to stay with one of my very best friends and prepared for the race. Well, after a late dinner that consisted of steak, potatoes, garlic cheese toast, salad, and many hours of sitting around talking, I finally got in the bed about 12:30AM. My alarm was set for 4:30, but I ended up getting up at 4:00 because I was tired of staring at the ceiling. I got ready and left the house by 5AM. After a 40-minute drive across town, I arrived at beautiful Oak Mountain State Park where I had to literally scrape together $3 worth of change to pay the fee to get into the park. Whoops! I completely forgot about it and I rarely carry cash. I apologized to the park ranger as I literally handed him a fistful of nickels and dimes. Moving on... I got my race packet and fooled around smearing body glide on my feet before putting my socks and shoes on. I went to a little church service they were having at 6:15 which was nice. I really enjoyed it. Xterra was having 3 races, a 5k, a 10k, and the 21k that I was doing. The 5kers were supposed to start at 7AM, but that got pushed back until 7:20AM. I hate when races start late. The 21kers were off at 7:30AM with a shotgun start. The 10kers were 10 minutes after us. We ran about a mile up the road before dropping into the woods. I started out waaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too fast; probably a sub-9 minute mile. I was just going with the flow, but would come to regret this very soon. We were running on beautiful single-track trails the entire day. The first mile had lots of switchbacks. Easy enough. About mile 2, I started walking. About mile 2, I was seriously considering a DNF for the first time ever. About mile 2, I wanted to cry. About mile 2, I was already in a lot of pain from a stupid blister. About mile 2, I came to find things were still easy. The heat and humidity were getting to me and I was being a big fat baby; plain and simple. About mile 2, it seemed like I had been passed by everyone competing in the 10k event. About mile 2.5, the hills started. (Let me add that my buddy who had never ran at the state park told me he heard that it was an "easy" race and much easier than McKay Hollow, a similar trail race in my hometown.) We climbed one hill. Okay... I can do that. A few steep hills are okay. About mile 4, I decided that I was actually okay with walking the rest of the race. I wish I would've counted how many hills were in this section. I'd say it was 4 miles of nothing but straight up and down. It might flatten out for 20-30 feet, and then it would be another hill. They were so steep! I really would love to see some of the more elite guys run some of those downhills, because I do not see how it was possible. I'm pretty good about letting gravity take over when I do downhill on the trails, but I couldn't do it here. They were scary steep. I was miserable. Everyone around me was walking. Oh, and complaining about the hills! At about mile 7, we ran on the road for a mile before we hit another trail. Oak Mountain also had a triathlon going on, and my friend, Matt, and I passed each other at this time. I thought that was cool! He is an awesome athlete, and he was flying up the road on his run portion. (Update: He just told me on facebook that his relay team finished 1st overall; awesome! He also told me that I looked great when we passed each other; total lie!) Before we drop back into the woods after the road section, I asked the aid station workers if they had a first-aid kit. They didn't but asked what I needed and I said a band-aid because I had a killer blister on my foot (2 days later it is still killing me; by far the worst I've ever had). A guy had some with him and I was thankful! I sat down on the side of the road and took off my soaking wet sock and shoe (I had crossed 2 small streams) and tried to adhere the band-aid to the ball of my left foot. They don't really like to stick to wet feet though. I did my best. I noticed at this time that my hands were shaking terribly. I still don't know why, but just went about my business. I got passed by several people at this time and seriously thought that I was now in last place. I'd say it took me about 5 minutes to do that whole foot thing. Then, I was off again! At this point, I think I'm about 8 miles into the race. I did have on my garmin, but I absolutely refuse to look at it. I think it would've depressed me to see how slow I was going and how far I still had to go. So, it was on my wrist, but I never once glanced at it. (I do plan to plug it into my computer this week to see the elevation gain/loss for this race.) The next 4-ish miles were some of the nicest, most beautiful switchback trails I've ever had the pleasure of running on. They were wonderful. Of course, I was already exhausted, so I couldn't run them like I would've liked. I did a run/walk combo that worked fine. I ran for a while and then walked when I was tired. At this time, I did see a snake which freaked me out a bit. I was all alone in the woods and he was in an opening on the side of the trail. He didn't bother me, but I was then worried that he had "friends" around. Thankfully, I didn't encounter any. I finally got out of the woods after winding around a beautiful lake for quite a while. A worker told me that I had just a .50 mile to go on the dreadful asphalt. Boy was the sun hot that was beating down on my shoulders! I told myself that I was going to run the rest of the time... only .50! I could see a guy in front of me taking a walk break and I was determined to catch him. Don't let me fool you, I was not moving fast; 10:00 pace at the absolute best. Before the race started, the RD told us that we had to go through a "mud-pit" and that there was an option to go around it, but our time would be penalized if we chose to do that. Well, with less than .50 to go, we still hadn't encountered it. I was thinking that he had been joking and was disappointed because I love good muddy runs and really didn't come across any in this race because it had been so dry. He wasn't lying. The guy in front of me literally ran through the lake I had been running around for a while. His first step was about at his knees. Okay, that is fine. His second step went up to his neck. This time I 100% promise that I am not exaggerating about that. I know my jaw dropped. The official that was standing there told me to jump in, so I did! I did the same thing as the guy in front of me. Everything went underwater but my head. It was a thick Alabama mud bottom, and I am very surprised that I did not lose a shoe. It was very hard to move in. The "mud-pit" was about 20 feet long and then we came out on the bank with less than 100 yards to go to the finish. When I came out, the guy that I was determined to pass was on the side of the path throwing up! I have a weak stomach, so I tried to pass him without looking over there. Then I thought that it was mean to just pass him like that so I told him "good job" and kept running. Then I realized how mean that was. It seemed like I was telling him good job for throwing up when I was really just trying to encourage him. I looked for him after the race to apologize because the more I thought about it the worse I felt. I never saw him though. It turns out that I didn't finish last. Thankfully. I was close though; I was 122 out of 128. Wow - that is embarrassing. Anyways... I knew absolutely nothing about this race or course going into it. I just knew that it was a trail half somewhere different and I wanted to try it. I had set an A goal of 3:00, a B goal of 3:45 (my McKay Hollow time), and a C goal of just finishing. I crossed the finish line in 3:01:01 although the course was a little short; it was more like 12 miles rather than 13. Oh well. Truth be told, I'm not complaining one bit that it was short. In the end, I'm happy with my time but still disappointed in my performance. I walked a lot and think I'm better than that. I'm okay with walking the hills. The last couple of miles were just nice little rollers, and I should've been able to run them if I were in the condition I wish I were in. I guess that is a goal to work towards. A few thoughts about the race: (1) Huntsville, where I run most of my races, has a strict no headphones policy which doesn't bother me whatsoever as I don't run with music. Birmingham does not, so A LOT of people were running with headphones. I am fine with that, except for the fact that the 10k racers started after us and were trying to say "on your left" to us slower 21kers and I saw A LOT of people not hear them and therefore not move out of the way. That was frustrating to see. I know that if I were fast and encountering that problem, I would've been upset. (2) At the first aid-station I got passed by these 2 guys that were running the 10k in vibram five-finger shoes. I can't decide if I like them for running or not. I like the minimalist mentality, but am not completely sold on running in them; especially trails. Well about 200 yards after the first aid station was the first significant hill climb. I was about halfway up it (walking, of course) and they were coming back down towards me. One of the guys was limping badly and when I looked at his foot, he literally had a branch sticking out of his toe area. It looked awful! I asked him if he was okay and he said yes. The guy behind me asked if he stubbed it and he said yes. I have a pair of vibrams (they were a gift), but am now 100% convinced that I will never wear them on the trails. Poor guy. (3) I think I'll be okay with never doing another race in the summer again. Temps got into the 90's this weekend but felt well over 100* and the humidity was just terrible. I heard someone describe it as they "felt like they were breathing soup" it was so muggy outside. (4) I'm generally curious about what type of aid people use on longer runs. So here is mine. I didn't have a single thing to eat until about 4PM on Saturday; no snacks during the race, no gu, etc. I carried my handheld water bottle with me and drank about 3/4 of it throughout the race. At each aid station, I would get one cup of water and splash it on my face to cool off. That is the extent of it. (5) I didn't take an ice-bath because I went back to my buddies and hung out for the rest of the weekend. I am feeling it today. My hips are letting me know that they are here. Ouchie! In the end, I had a good time and am glad I did the race. I seriously considered a DNF. I just wasn't feeling it the first several miles. The blister + the heat and humidity were getting to me. I have never quit anything in my entire life and didn't plan to start on a stinkin' half marathon. A full, an ultra, a triathlon - maybe. Hopefully not, but maybe; but not a half! Also, I'm not really proud of this, but thought I would share with my FRB friends: I went to check what my official time was online, and it turns out that I got 3rd in my AG. They were giving out hardware for AG winners, but I didn't stick around for that so I didn't know. I would be super excited if I felt that I worked hard and deserved it. I didn't. It was a pitiful race. It just so happens that only 3 people were registered in the female 20-24 division. Maybe one day I'll actually work hard enough to feel I earned it... something to strive for. Sorry this is so long!

3.1 mile Panorama Loop with my buddies. We were all slow. I was recovering from my trail race and they were recovering from a hilly 10k that was in town on Saturday. Nice and chatty; just the way I like it. The air was sooooooo thick with humidity. I was dripping sweat from a measly 5k. I mean dripping.
A friend that I scrapbook with has a 9ish year old daughter named Carys who is a competitive gymnast. Well during the summer they are having to run .50 mile loops 3 times/week. They do 1 loop for a few weeks, 2 loops for a few weeks, 3 loops for a few weeks, and then 4 loops for a few weeks at the end of the summer. So, they are working up to 2 miles. Each loop has to be completed in less than 5 minutes which would be a 10 minute mile pace. Carys has been finishing her 1 loop in like 4:50 which is pretty good. But, other girls are beating her and she is not happy with that. So, Dawn (my friend - her mom), called me last week and asked me to come by and run with her for a minute and give her some pointers. We ran our first .50 in 4:18. We stopped at the end of the street and I gave her a few pointers and then we ran the second .50 in 4:04. Dawn had originally asked me to come by just this once to give my opinion, but I offered to come every Monday after my normal run to get in a few extra miles and work with Carys. I don't mind one bit. Actually, I could use the extra mileage. I think next week I'll try to push her to 1.50 without stopping in the middle for pointers like we did this time. Is that too much too soon for a 9-year old that doesn't really run much? Oh well... I guess we'll find out next Monday. I think last night was a success.
A funny little tid-bit: So when I got to Dawn's house we talked for a few minutes before Carys and I were ready to go. The family went inside and we were walking to the end of the driveway. I asked Carys if she wanted to stretch for a minute and I started stretching my calves on the curb. She was like "ummmmm... okay" and proceeded to do the splits, I mean completely do the splits, in the middle of her concrete driveway. OUCH! I told her that was enough stretching and started running. I nearly cried just looking at her. |

Trails! YAY!
Got to Monte Sano about an hour early. I normally sit up there and do homework while I wait on my friends, but decided that I wanted to ride my bike for an hour instead. I went down the old road that used to come to the top of the mountain. I'd never been on it before. It wasn't as bad as I expected. 1.55 miles each way. Going down was obviously much easier than coming back up. I saw 2 guys both ways and they kinda creeped me out because they were just standing there talking but they didn't really appear to be hikers or anything. I took it easy both ways; 7 minutes down, 10 minutes up. By the way, this is the biggest "mountain" (really one of the only mountains) in all of North Alabama. It probably wouldn't even be considered a "hill" by most of y'alls standards. I got back to the top and was going to ride some more, but one of my friends showed up, so I sat and talked with her until we were supposed to run.
By the time we were supposed to run, some very dark clouds had moved in over us. We debated about skipping the run and just going to eat. In the end, I, the voice of reason (or really the idiot), said that we were all on the mountain to run so we might as well do it. Rain isn't going to hurt anyone. They were more concerned about the lightning. Blah blah blah. We ran. It poured and poured and poured. It was absolutely fantastic. My friend, Laura, and I splash right through all the puddles while the rest of them all try to go around. That is always funny to me. You're going to get dirty; just get over it. Laura and I went to Panera Bread after running. Yum! We were both soaked and muddy and disgusting looking. Ha! |

| | My brother told me a while back that he wanted to try out my gym to see if he was interested in working out there. So today at church he asked if we could go after church. I told him sure; I would run on the dreadmill while he lifted weights or whatever it is that he wanted to do. The more I thought about it, the more I realized I did not want to run inside. It just plain sucks. So, I showed him around and did 10 minutes of ab work and thought I was going to die. I asked him if he was okay and said that I was going to run trails. By the way, how do y'all do like 45 minutes of ab work? I know that Scott does stuff like this. 10 minutes was killer for me. It sucked. I got to Monte Sano about 1PM and realized that the person in front of me was paying to get into the park. Crap! I've never paid to get in. The gate person only sits in the booth during normal hours on the weekends, so when my buddies and I meet up there at 6AM, they aren't collecting money yet. I drove all the way down the mountain to the ATM and back up to pay the lady my $3. That wasted a good 30 minutes. Argh. I was running in the heat of the day. According to my car, it was about 93* when I started at 1:30. I had my handheld water bottle with me. The plan was to run the first half of the McKay Hollow Trail Race course with a finish up Death Trail. Well, about 1.5 miles into the run, I got lost. I am pretty sure I know where I took my wrong turn, but I ended up doing part of what I had just run twice which really irritated me. I still don't see how I did that. I made it through my favorite part of the mountain, Stone Cuts. This area is absolutely beautiful. part of Stone Cuts At the top of Stone Cuts (yes, you climb the rocks), the course runs along a trail. It appeared to me that no one had been running up there because the brush and weeds were so thick. I should've taken a pic. They literally came up to my chest and blocked just about the whole trail. I could just make it out if I looked straight down. I was a bit worried about seeing the state bird of Alabama, the snake, in this section, so I was booking it. I wish they would maintain that area a little better. I paid my $3 to get into the park, I should at least be able to see the trails! (I know a guy that used to work there for like 3 years and he told me that all they do is play around all day, not do important things like trail maintenance, so I am a little irritated about it.) Shortly after Stone Cuts is where I got lost. I ended up coming to the area again in my exploring, but decided that I did not want to bushwhack my way through the wilderness at the top again, so I just ran by. just what some Alabama trails look like... I finally came to the 3-benches intersection (you guessed it, 3 benches are there) and knew where I was. Yay! I took Goat Trail through the woods for several miles until I had a nice little climb back up to civilization. That is where I encountered my first people of the day; a family of 6 out biking. They were slow, so I ran past them and around the top of the mountain to my car. I was glad to see it. This was the first time that I've ever emptied my water bottle on a run. I ran out with probably a mile to go. I was completely soaked in sweat from the darn humidity. It was pretty brutal out today. climb back to civilization. hills like this = walk break! I have noticed that I don't really get blisters from road running, but get them terribly from trail running. They are always in the same area, on the balls of my feet. Anyone have any insight as to why? It is irritating and painful. I guess on the downhills I am probably more on my toes, but isn't everyone? I hope y'all are all having a wonderful Father's Day! |

Busy, busy, busy, busy, busy. Too much to do and not enough time.
5PM - 2.1 miles. Temps had to be 95*. I was on the open road; no breeze, no shade, just hot. Pace: 9:38 - pretty quick for me!
Went to my little brother and sister's swim meet. They are so adorable! They both won their heat too. YAY!! I was told that the meet started at 5:30, but it really started at 6:30. So, I was rushing like crazy for nothing trying to get in a few miles. I could've gone longer and in a much more pleasant place. Argh.
8PM - 3.3 miles. Temps dropped to maybe 85* Trails. Saw 2 deer, 1 fox, 1 cat, 0 homo sapiens, 8,367,914.2 bugs. I started this after "sunset," when the state park technically closes 30 minutes before sunset. My headlamp was at home. I thought that it would be pitch black at 8:45, so that gave me just enough time to get in 1 loop. Well, it gets dark before 8:45. I should know this. Had I been running on the open road, I would've been fine, as we had a beautiful, full moon. On the trails, the trees tend to block most of the moonlight. My eyes adjusted because I had been outside, but the last mile was pretty slow going, as it had gotten dark. I looked at my watch at one point and it said it was doing a 12-minute pace. I didn't feel comfortable going much faster than that because of all the roots and rocks and stumps to trip on. I am normally scared of the dark, but I wasn't scared being out there. When I think about that, I am amazed due to the fast that wild animals are everywhere in those woods; I could hear them all around me. I was worried about falling and breaking a leg/arm and no one finding me. I didn't have my cell phone with me (no service, anyways), so I would've been there until I could drag myself to the car or someone found me the next day. Or, I could possibly be some wild animal's supper, and never be heard from again ;-) It's a good thing I made it home okay! This was probably one of the dumber things I've done (in regard to the lighting conditions), but it was still a ton of fun.
I also tried to practice landing more on my midfoot on one of the flatter sections of the trail. I am naturally a heel-striker. I started thinking about that while I was running, so I thought that now was as good a time as any to practice. It didn't last too long because I came upon a more technical section. That is probably something I should practice more on the road. I also thought about my breathing as rAtTLeTrAp recently mentioned his breathing. Mine typically has no rhyme or reason; just breathing in and out. I truly don't see how he keeps count. I just confused myself trying to keep up with it!

Soooooooo exhausted after the weekend. 23 girls on a weekend trip = no sleep. It was fun though!
Did a double Panorma Loop. Ran the first loop backwards by myself and the second loop a little slower with my friends. 5.5 miles total. I started about 5:15; car said it was 95* on the mountain. Whew! Talked about marriage on the second loop tonight. I am the only non-married one of my group, and after tonight I plan to stay that way for quite a while! Those women are hilarious. I guess that is why we run together though... so we can vent our problems to our friends when needed. Since I don't really have any experience in the marriage department, I just listen and soak in everything they say. They are going to turn me into a He-Man Woman Haters Club member (name that movie), but opposite... She-Woman Man Haters, I guess it would be. DO NOT look that up on Urban Dictionary. HA!
Did 1 mile of speedwork with my little gymnast. She was able to do 1 mile in 8:41. She is quite speedy for her age and not being a runner at all. Her mom told me last night that she is telling everyone at gymnastics that she has a "running coach" working with her. Hahaha. Too funny. Kids are the cutest.
Stopped on my way home and treated myself to a cookies n cream milkshake from the local ice cream shop. That was a tasty dinner! |

Today I ate: 3 donuts and some leftover wedding cake for breakfast and 3 donuts for lunch. No dinner. No time. I drank maybe a half bottle of water throughout the day. Wow.
I drove from job A to job B (like 2.5 miles apart). Yes, I, the person that doesn't have time to breathe, took a second job. Why do I agree to help people out? Argh. I don't have time for this, but I'm doing it anyways. We were having a meeting at 6PM which gave me an hour to kill. So, I played on my bike for about 40 minutes, covering 11 miles. Temps actually weren't tooooooooo terribly bad this afternoon (like 90ish?) with a little breeze so this was enjoyable. I still wish I would've ran. Oh well.
This was my second longest bike ride ever; the longest being when I was about 8 years old and my family went for a bike-ride around Cades Cove in Gatlinburg, TN. Goodness I love that place. I bet 95% of y'all haven't even heard of it. That ride was like 12ish miles and I cried like a baby. It was hilly and a lot of work for an 8-year old. I finished though. I'd like to go back now and redeem myself with no tears. :)
Update: Now, the next day, my "sit bones" hurt. Ouch! I didn't wear bike shorts and am regretting that now. Who knew sitting at a desk all day could be so uncomfortable? |

How does a 4-mile route end up being 3.65?
Hills. Dang, I hate those things.
I swam 400 meters again this weekend. Last time I did it in 12:48 and was thrilled. This time I did it in 11:13. I can't imagine that I have improved that much. I was trying to swim a bit harder, but I was still pleasantly surprised at the time. I love a 1:35 improvement!
Also did about 4 miles on my bike - to the pool, back home for (more) drinks, back to the pool, and back home.
So, I practically did a tri... it was just all broken up. And, the bike portion was a bit short and at an extremely leisurely pace.
I hope y'all all had a wonderful 4th of July weekend. I certainly did! I am positive that I gained no less than 74 lbs from all the food I ate. |

Trails; my slice of heaven.
Legs were dead the whole time. I assume from hills on Monday.
Planning a surprise party for another one of our running friends during the run.
Face planted about .25 into the run; knew it would be a good day after that!
Saw a ton of other folks out today: runners, mountain bikers, and hikers.
Hit a mailbox on my way home because I was looking at a cute dog. Argh. |

I played 1.5 hours of volleyball at lunch today. YAY! That was a pretty good workout and my team totally won. When I was making an awesome kill one time today I thought of Burt and this recent picture I got of him. Burt likes to kick Mother Nature in the ovarian cyst when the weather is bad. Sometimes it is because of the rain. At other times, like now, it is because of the heat. Please check out his rockin' bod though. Burt is a p90x'ing fool these days and was clearly showing off his recent progress while taking his anger out on Mother Nature. At least he didn't whip Thain Filkin on this particular day. On an unrelated note, I was out to dinner tonight with a friend that had bet $30 that Lebron would go to the Heat. With all the people that got into the pool and dividing it by those that chose Miami, he ended up winning $125!! Sweet! We each ordered an extra beer in celebration. Sasha, please don't kick me off the blog for talking about gambling and alcohol.

I ate lunch at 2:30. A salad from Zaxby's, known as a "zalad." I'm not sure if most of y'all have those. Delicious!
Then off to the mountain to do trails. I hoped to get in 7 miles and improve upon my horrible run from Saturday morning.
Less than 30 minutes wasn't enough time for my stomach to digest. I run after eating a lot and normally don't have problems. I'm thinking it was either the ranch dressing or the lettuce that did me in. Plus the 100ish degree temps. I threw up twice in the first mile. BLAH.
Run/walk/hobble/crawl after that just to get back to my car. I felt horrible.
Also saw a snake that kinda creeped me out because he was slithering. Ick.
Got back to my car and saw a naked man in the parking lot. Disgusting. He was changing out of his hiking clothes. Disgusting.
Terrible weekend for my running. Hopefully this next week will go better. |

Ran trails with my girlfriends today. We went a bit quicker than normal (because we were running late) and I enjoyed it. I pulled ahead of the group for probably the last .50 or so and ran around an 8:30 pace. That was nice. Now I just need to do that the whole loop + about 50 more miles. HA! A girl can dream :)
Then we went to the Huntsville Track Club meeting which was very interesting last night. They had 3 local ultrarunning legends speak about some of their running experiences. Between the 3 of them, I do believe they've done just about every major ultra in the country, and many around the world. Rob and Kathy Youngren spoke about "Fire and Ice." Kathy ran Badwater last year, "Fire" and she and Rob just ran the Antarctica Marathon in March, thus, "Ice." Rob won the marathon and Kathy finished about 9 minutes behind him in second place. She was the first female ever to go sub-4 in Antarctica. Dink Taylor, the other speaker, is the owner of our local Fleet Feet store and an amazing runner. He spoke about his experience of running the Strolling Jim 40 miler for 24 straight years, his first being at age 21. Someone asked him why he got into ultra's and he replied, "I knew I was never going to be the winner of a big 10k race, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I could easily run a sub-8 pace for 50 miles. That's easy." Yea, me too, Dink. Me too.
I limited myself to a salad, 3 pieces of pizza, and 2 cookies for dinner.
Hope everyone has a good week! Things are crazy here. |

Temps cooled off a bit as it seemed like a storm was going to roll in. Unfortunately, it never hit. It would've felt so good. I love running in the rain! Pushed the pace a little more than normal on this run. I enjoyed it.
Went swimming after my run. Swimming is HARD! I did 400m in 10:38 and somehow managed not to drown. I'm trying to learn how to do a one and a half off the diving board. I bet I flipped off that thing no less than 132,945 times last night and never got it. Argh. I was getting there until I landed flat on my face. Then I was scared to fully rotate more after that because my head was throbbing so much. Good times! I'll get it one of these days...
Hope y'all have a great week! |

Hill Route.
Parked at Randolph School early and ran .65 to my dad's house to fill my water bottle up with some nice, fresh, hot, hose water. Yum! Then I ran a different way back to the school to wait on my runner girls for a killer hill workout. 1.25 total at 8 min pace.
Then the 3.5 mile hill route started. I was already dragging. It was SOOOOOO hot yesterday. Whew! I do believe that is the hottest I've been on a run all summer. I felt like I was dripping in sweat (I was), but when the run was over 2 of my friends commented that I wasn't sweating much. I have such hydration issues. I drank an entire water and gatorade when we got back to the car. I carried my handheld with me (something I haven't been doing lately on runs shorter than 5 miles), but didn't drink from it at all.
The heat was brutal, so we walked the hills but ran everything else. There are 4 major hills on the route. My friend, Jen, and I took the lead and stayed there the entire time. But, every time we got to a hill we would wait for our friends to catch up. I wonder how much faster we would've finished if we hadn't waited on them.
I left a to-go sized portion of banana pudding in my car during the 2ish hours I was out with my friends (that includes going to my dad's and lots of socializing time). It was around 100* outside, so I hate to think what the temp in my car was. I didn't really want the banana pudding before the run, but decided after the run that is sounded tasty. That probably wasn't the smartest thing! I haven't gotten sick, but my stomach has felt queasy for several hours now. Yippee! |

| | I am alive! Barely! Sunday night I started feeling really crappy and I got up and went to work on Monday. When I arrived my co-worker told me I looked terrible. Thanks! I left work at noon because I felt terrible and went to my friend Laura's house to take a nap before we had a kickoff meeting for that 5k program we coach. I felt more and more like crap. Tuesday I felt like I had died. I called in sick and actually went to the doctor. If you know me, you know how rare this is. I DO NOT go to the doc. He did a strep test and told me I tested negative for it. He thought I was in the beginning stages of it though and if I would come back tomorrow (Wednesday) I would probably test positive. Since I was a negative, he couldn't give me a shot. I had a "severe" throat and sinus infection. He gave me some steroids and some nasty liquid cough medicine. I went home took the medicine and slept the rest of the day. I'm still dragging today (Wednesday), but can tell that I'm feeling somewhat better. Who gets sick in the middle of the summer? I am so upset. Argh. No running this week. Hopefully I'll get in 6+ miles on Saturday. |

7 on the marathon course at 6AM with my friends. My buddy Jonathan that I've talked about running with on here several times invited me to a 5k race this Saturday at 9AM. His mom was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and they were charging a $5 entry fee (or more if you'd like) and donating the money to breast cancer research. I'd say they had about 50 people participate which is great considering it was just a little race done at a friends house. I did a run/walk combo and just had a good time visiting with some old friends. The course was an out and back on a road that runs between 2 cotton fields. This means no shade and rolling hills. It was brutal!!

A new 5k training group started tonight. 10 weeks until their 5k! We ran 1 mile at an 11 min pace. It was so hot out, that I was sweating at that pace. Then when we were done I ran 1 mile faster on my own at a 9ish pace. My legs felt dead.
I love helping with these groups. It is very rewarding. I know that my own running suffers when I'm caught up in helping them, but I really do enjoy it.
Oh yea... I was late to the run (missed stretching). I am dog sitting this week and I locked myself out of the people's house! I was stuck outside in the brutal heat while the dogs were looking at me through the window enjoying the ac. I was sooooo mad. All because I was trying to water their stupid tomato plants that I told her I would probably kill anyways because I have a black thumb! Anyways, I finally got in by scaling the house to a balcony on the second story. The door happened to be unlocked and I was sooooooo happy! I was so stressed... literally in tears because I absolutely refused to pay for a locksmith to come out!
Then it was back home to study for finals after my run. One more week. One more week. One more week. Then I have a break of about 10 days before fall semester starts back. Wahoo! |

| | Trails! Last planned run up there for a while. Unfortunately. Next week my friends and I are starting a much more serious half marathon training schedule. I'll be honest and tell y'all that my goal is to go sub-2. I don't think it will happen, but I'm going to work hard this summer/fall to see how close I can get. I know I'll get there one day, I just don't think it will be right now. So this morning (Thursday) when I let the dogs out I turned on the hose to water the tomatoes and then went to get in the shower. My plan was to turn the hose off after I got out of the shower, giving them a good 15-20 minute soaking. Well, I FORGOT about them until I was leaving for work! So, that means that I watered them for like an hour! Ahhhhhh. Allie, are they going to die from getting too much water? Another funny thing is that the knob to turn the hose on is behind this rock feature water garden thing that I literally have to crawl up and over to get to it. So, I was doing that in a dress and heels this morning! Goodness I hope the neighbors weren't watching! These stupid tomatoes are going to be the death of me. Hope everyone has a great day! |

Half training has officially started! Well, for me anyways. It officially starts today (on Tuesday), but I have my last final (stats II) tonight, and will not be able to make our first run. Therefore, I got in my 4 by myself.
Nothing too interesting other than I was running in the pouring down rain (and it felt great) and this creepy old man pulled up next to me in his truck and asked if I needed a ride. NO THANK YOU! I kindly told him that I was enjoying the rain and kept on moving. Eeek.
I want to share with y'all a little funny that was a local story from my hometown. It has made national news because... well, just watch. It really is a serious and sad situation, but Antoine is so funny!

He was not happy about our early start time, but I told him he should've thought about that before drinking so much the night before when we had already agreed upon our meeting time. No sympathy here. Last Sunday in church, my preacher said something that I can not get out of my head: "One person you will never satisfy is yourself." So true. Run faster. Make better grades. Have a better job. Read the Bible more. Run longer distances. Save more money. I could go on and on. I'm never satisfied, but I try to work towards my goals every single day. Anyways, I thought I would share. I hope y'all are all having a fantastic weekend! |

I'm pleased with all of them except #4. I don't race much at all so when our "coach" was putting together this schedule, she didn't really know what to put for me. She had a goal of 2:20 down for these which I told her was too slow. I really thought I would've been faster than this though. Oh well. By the way, it was by far the most humid run of my life. I was literally dripping after our warmup. Yet, I still drank nothing on the run. I have issues. Okay, I believe Burt requested a funny story. Lets see... I am taking peanut butter and banana sandwiches for lunch this week (yum!), so on Monday when I went to get in my car, I dropped the bag of ingredients (bread, bananas, peanut butter). I have some severely bruised bananas on my hands now. The funny (not really) part was that the jar of peanut butter rolled right in the middle of the underside of my car. So I was on the ground in a dress trying to reach for it. NOT PRETTY. Thank goodness I live in the country and don't have any neighbors that are too close by. Another one: Monday at work (same day), I was walking down the hall to wash out my coffee cup and I tripped and fell over my own feet and spilt coffee all over my Lilly dress. Not happy. At all. If my dress wasn't ruined from crawling on the ground, it definitely is from that darn coffee. |

Did a little sprint tri as part of a team. I was slow. The course sucks.
I was supposed to go run about 10 miles on the trails after, but my tri partner suggested we go to Waffle House instead. I couldn't turn him down. It was delicious. After that I went home and took a 4-hour nap. It was great, but I felt like a slacker when I woke up. Oh well.
Then one of my very best friends growing up got married. Of my close friends, she is the first to tie the knot. I had a blast, but it made me kinda sad; we are officially growing up and it sucks. |

Easy run for my 13.1 group. I ran with a friend and we kept a pretty good pace (around 10:00 or so), but then she wanted to stop and walk twice on the last half. I was in the groove but stopped with her. She is having a slight emotional crisis right now and her running is suffering. She is definitely a better runner than me, but I felt like I was pushing the pace with her tonight. We had a nice chat and even went and got Starbucks and pedicures after we were done. Those poor people having to touch our nasty feet...
I'm leaving for Vegas this weekend for a week. I'll be there for a conference. I packed some running clothes, but I seriously doubt I'll log any miles. I'm hopeful, but I know we have long hours every day. We shall see.

My body is paying back for taking nearly 2 weeks off. This run wasn't much better than Tuesday's, but at least I got it done. I'll get my mojo back eventually. My calves and hammies were t-i-g-h-t, which is not a common problem for me. I need to stretch more.

| | Saturday I didn't get my long run in. While my friends were waking to their alarm clocks and the promise of a beautiful morning for our planned 13-miler, I was headed to Washington DC, to do something far more important. I was taking part in my hometown "Honor Flight," where we take WWII veterans that have never had the opportunity up to see their memorial. It was truly one of the greatest experiences of my life and something I will never forget. Out of literally thousands of volunteers, I was fortunate enough to be chosen, one of thirty from Huntsville, to escort a veteran for the day; September 11, 2010. My alarm clock went off at 2:30AM. I had to be at the airport to greet my veteran by 4AM. I had very little sleep, but actually woke up early from the anticipation and the excitement. Lots of things were happening at the airport; a band, supporters, a live vocalists singing patriotic songs, flags everywhere, one veteran having a seizure (sad, but true... he didn't get to make the trip), etc. At 5:30AM I even got a nice and very deliberate pinch on my bottom by one older gentleman. To say I was caught off guard would be an understatement! The day was fantastic. We started off flying from Huntsville to Washington. One of the men I sat by on the plane had never even flown! They were all so excited. Every time we had a successful take-off and landing, the plane would erupt into cheers and applause. It was fun to see them so excited about the day. We made many stops throughout the day; the most important being a visit
to the WWII Memorial. We also visited Arlington National Cemetery, the
Korean War Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and Iwo Jima. This was my
first time to see Iwo Jima, and I have to say that I was quite
impressed! I was so impressed with everything. No detail was
left out. At every stop we made, they had people from all branches of
service there to salute the veterans and than them for their service.
They had a band at both airports playing music from the era. In
Washington DC they even had dancers from the era. It was just so fun!
At the airport in Huntsville before we left. Mr. Hester and I with Lincoln in the background. Changing of the guard and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington.
Korean War Memorial. Iwo Jima.
Mr. Hester and I at the WWII Memorial. Dancers at the airport. (Please notice the guys hair... only reason I took a pic!)
Being welcomed home. I spotted my mom, but Mr. Hester had no idea she was taking out picture. He was just shaking hands and enjoying the moment.
The day ended with us arriving back home to Huntsville with a welcoming crowd of literally thousands. It brought tears to my eyes to walk through the throng of cheering people; people that didn't know me or my veteran or anyone there for that matter. They were just there to support such a wonderful cause. You've never seen so many American flags waving or patriotic colors being worn. I am proud to come from a town that supports our military and our veterans so much. To end the night on a good note, my veteran gave me a kiss... ON THE LIPS! HA! I wasn't expecting that one either. We had a good time together, and you know what, it made my day! He was a sweetie and I enjoyed getting to know him.

Don't remember my splits. My goal range was 4:06-4:16. I hit that on 5 of the 8. Reps 6 and 7 were a little slower. I always try to make my last one the fastest and succeeded this time; 3:56 - I wish they were all that fast! |

| | We were planning to run 6ish miles of the Monte Sano 15k course tonight. We parked in the state park and headed out. One of the girls that I run with left her kids on the playground with her hubby watching them. Well, the park ranger came and told him that he was locking the parking lot gate in 30 minutes and if we weren't back, too bad. So, we obviously came nowhere close to finishing our run. Fritz came and found us in his car and we all headed back to the parking lot, taking a shorter route. When we got there, the ranger was sitting in his truck with the lights flashing waiting on us. SERIOUSLY?!?! What a *dirty word*. In all honesty, I was dragging anyways. So, I was okay with calling it quits. My feet have been completely numb on my last several runs; so irritating. |

As much as I've been dreading cooler temps and the end of summer, this run was fantastic! I felt great and really should've gone out for more. The promise of wings and beer from BWW kept my mileage low. Temps were around 65* or so. I started with a jacket, but quickly tied it around my waist and just ran in my tank. Pace was slow, as I was with my 5k group. I felt great; like I could've kept going for 20 more miles. Maybe next time I'll be more dedicated to running and not let the temptation of yummy wings stop me.
As great as the run was, I miss warm weather...
(also - i kept my shoes looser, and my feet didn't go numb until about mile 2 tonight rather than right from the start. that is an improvement and i'm quite happy!) |

6x800 with a 3 minute rest between sets. 1 mile wu. 1 mile cd.
A very good run for me. The lower temps really are glorious for running. It was about 70* or so. I'm still missing that summer sunshine though.
I don't have all my splits. My goal pace was 4:16-4:28 on every one. I beat that time on all but the last one, which was 4:28. I try to run my last one the fastest normally, but I didn't have it in me tonight. I'm disappointed, but it'll be okay. All of the others were in the 4:05-4:10 range. YAY for beating my goal! This was a tough neighborhood "course" for 800's. We ran out and back. The out 800 was nice; slightly downhill. That means the back 800 was slightly uphill. We could all tell a huge difference in the directions.
Had a man offer to pull his hose out and set it up in his yard for us. How nice of him!
Looser shoes again. Only my right foot went numb tonight around mile 3. By the end, my entire left leg up to my hip was literally numb. What is up with that?!?!
Although my sun-worshiping self knows I shouldn't say this, I'm thankful for these cooler temps. ONLY in regard to running though! |

Great start to the week!
Had 5k training group tonight. They ran 3 slow miles. Their first 5k is October 16th... soon! I'm excited for them.
Before the group, I ran with my buddy, Eric. It was a slllloooooooowwwww recovery jog for him and the best run of my life for me! I ran 4 miles at a sub-10 pace; 9:59 to be exact. I didn't have a goal in mind before we started... just to get in some miles. We had a killer headwind for most of the run and it was rolling hills. Temperatures and weather were PERFECT. Great run! I was so excited to hold a sub-10 pace for that long. I've never done that before and was quite happy. The best part... it seemed easy. Eric and I chatted the whole time and that 40 minutes flew by.
Have a good week everyone! |

Last training group run. The 5k they have been training for is this Saturday. Wahoo! I am excited to see how they do. We just did a 2-mile "fun run" last night. Easy peasy. Around a 10:30 pace.
The real "fun run" was beforehand. I told Eric I wanted to do an easy 4. So he sends me a mapmyrun link at work titled "Columbus Day FUN Run," which consists of hills and hills and more hills and big hills and little hills and up up up up up. I was dying. But, I know it is good for me.
90* in North Alabama when I ran at 6pm yesterday. Isn't that crazy?
Have a good week everyone!
Oh yea... I bumped into the infamous Nevels at Starbucks this weekend. Guess what a large portion of our conversation was... you crazy bloggers! We need y'all to come to Alabama.... |

Ran a local race. Nothing special. I have been sick with sinus issues and probably shouldn't have done this. I definitely had trouble breathing. It's a tough, hilly course, but I enjoyed it. Started with my friends, but over the miles we split up a bit. Official time - 30:48. It is a sub 10mm pace, which is really all I wanted. |

I miss running. Doc said I need to wait until this weekend, minimum. At this point, I am definitely not up to it. My throat still hurts terribly. Therefore, I couldn't breathe. I'm going a bit stir crazy. I would like to fully heal though, so I am trying to be patient.
Did first form of exercise in about 3 weeks tonight. YOGA! It felt great! I took it easy on some of the plank stuff simply because I didn't want to start sweating. The hour long class was terrific.
I hope to be back to the old KP (sans tonsils) very soon! |

I RAN! I RAN! I RAN!
First time since October 16th! It was glorious. 3 miles with my friends. They've gotten faster in my time off! I made it my goal to keep up with them. I was determined not to walk, and I didn't! That was very exciting. Hopefully I haven't lost as much fitness as I thought. It was slow but steady. The weather was 55 p-e-r-f-e-c-t degrees; skirt, ss shirt, and gloves (which I'm glad I decided to put on at the last minute!) for me.

| | Out and about around Tuscaloosa. Ran around the stadium; rubbed The Bear's foot for good luck; had an old man tell me I was pretty; laughed at the tailgaters already drinking at 9AM; got thirsty and was tempted to ask for a beer; cut the run short due to chronic dry mouth syndrome... I forgot my gum! Weather was p-e-r-f-e-c-t. What a beautiful day!

Ran the Jingle Bell Run 5k with Nana. I have NEVER in my life met someone who can walk as fast as her. It is unreal. She'll jog for a minute or two (which I love; nice and slow) and then she'll walk for a few minutes. I can not physically walk that fast. I would try my hardest to keep up with her and she would slowly pull ahead of me until she started running again... then I would catch up. We finished in about 37 minutes (we started late - bathroom break - so our official time was like 40 something). She finished first in her age group at ripe young age of 72.
This was a special race day for me, as a friend of mine that was in a horrific bike accident last year (they expected him to be paralyzed for the rest of his life), walked/shuffled the entire 3.1. He was an avid ultrarunner prior to his accident. I know he misses it more than you could ever imagine. I was SO proud of him. At this race last year, we were all excited that he was able to move his wheelchair up and down the hall with his feet when he spent several months in a spinal cord injury hospital in Atlanta. I have never met someone with a more positive attitude. He truly inspires me.

Runs like this make you a stronger runner. That is what I'm going to tell myself anyways.
Rain. Dark. Cold. Headwind.
I miss sunshine.
Truth be told, I enjoyed it in an "I'm miserable" way.
I ran on a very busy road and feel certain that I flashed 98% of Huntsville's residents. The wind was whipping and my skirt kept flying up. Thank goodness they have shorts underneath! |

| | Couldn't sleep. After staring at the ceiling for quite some time, I decided to go for a run at about 6:45AM. Perfect out; chilly and a nice breeze with a slight drizzle. I shed my jacket quickly. First run with my new baby. I'm a mama now :) Sadie is a perfect 3ish year old German Sheppard. I think she'll make a splendid running partner. Today went quite well. She didn't stop to smell 8 million things and really ran right next to me the whole time. I was quite pleased. Hopefully I didn't kill her on day 1! We took it easy, running about a 10:30 pace. She now has a pretty pink collar and leash that I know that she loves.
Burt, no comments about her big ears. I think they are beautiful!

No run. Again. Yes, I am that much of a slacker, and I am okay with it. Sadie Belle and I just wanted to wish everyone a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! God blessed us with a white Christmas this year! My first ever!!! It was absolutely beautiful. I think I would've been happy staring out the window at the fluffy goodness all day. (PS - Sadie LOVED it. l.o.v.e. She was hilarious!)

First run in 18 days. Longest run since Septemberish. Hillish route.
Perfect running weather at 45ish degrees at 5PM. Passed the same man twice wearing sweatpants, sweatshirt with hood up, toboggan, gloves, and a reflective vest. He was also wearing a headlamp and carrying a flashlight. I had on shorts and a white s/s tech shirt. We were certainly dressed for different weather. I don't think I'd wear that much if it were 10 degrees outside. I was sweating other than my hands which were FROZEN. If I were skinny, I do believe I would've taken my shirt off and wrapped my hands up in it. They were that cold. Alas, I am not skinny. I didn't want to scare the poor people passing in their cars.
As y'all know, we had SNOW at Christmas! Well, it has all melted other than the snowmen people built (which are everywhere, btw - we don't get snow often). So as I was running down the sidewalk, a snowman's head had all the melting he could handle and rolled off and hit my leg. First of all, it scared me half to death. I screamed. I tripped. I fell in the grass. It wasn't pretty. AND IT WAS COLD.
I had stomach cramps the whole time. Could it be because this is what I had to eat yesterday: chick fil a biscuit and hashbrowns with coke; then a coworker brought in a coffee cake to work... had to have some of it too with lots of coffee; firehouse sub, chips and coke; chocolate chip cookie; chick fil a sandwich and mountain dew; puppy chow; gummy bears. How have I not gained any weight? No running and still eating like that. Sheesh... And, since when do I drink so many cokes?!?!? I normally drink water! I like water! It's because I ate out a lot yesterday... coke comes with the combo.
And, it'll probably be another 18 days before I run again. LAME. |
