Sunday I played tennis with one of the girls on my trip to DC.  She lives in Atlanta and is a super-awesome tennis player.  I played in high school and then didn't touch a racquet for about 4 years until I played again last year.  It's been about a year again of no play.  I don't have the time with working full time and going to school full time and trying to run some to squeeze in a tennis league too.  I got my butt kicked.  It was an awesome workout though.  Needless to say, my entire upper body, from my butt up aches.  I guess those are all the muscles I don't use while running.  I was wondering why my abs hurt so much and then it dawned on me that I had played a tough tennis match.

Yesterday I arrived home after about 13.5 hours in the car.  It was a long drive home, but worth it.  What an amazing trip!  We got home around 6PM so I still had plenty of daylight to go play.  I thought I would ride my neighborhood bike loop and then maybe run a few miles just to stretch out my legs.  Well, I was about 3 miles from home when my bike got a flat tire.  I was so pissed.  UGH.  That was a long and frustrating walk home.  I even cried while walking down the road I was soooooooo mad.  Stupid bike.  I took it today and got the tire fixed.  Argh.  Anyways, I was so frustrated that I did not run.  Instead, I went to Arby's and got a milkshake.

Ran with the 10k training group tonight.  I would like to help coach them too, but I normally have classes on Tuesday nights (when they meet) so that wouldn't work.  This is my last week of summer break and I am enjoying it fully.  This group is tapering for the 10k race they are running this weekend, so it was only about 2.5 miles.  I ran a 9:30 pace.  I was pleased with that.  The heat was about 90* when we started, but the humidity didn't seem as bad today.  It really was a good run.  I had a nice chat with some of my favorite people.  I love that!

Sorry about the bike, but congratulations for getting back out there for a run in the heat.

Sorry about the flats; so frustrating. Glad you got a nice run and chat with the group today. Enjoy your last week of summer break! Man, is it hot in Alabama or what?! Stay cool, little missy!

are you running Cotton Row?

10k or 5k?

From KP on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 00:49:07 from 98.67.171.202

i'm running the 5k with my training group... so, slow.

i have been thinking about banditing the 10k. it could be fun... either that or just help out at the finish line. that might be the better thing to do. i know suz could use the help.

what about you? race the 10k and start at the back of the 5k again this year?

From Nevels on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 00:55:49 from 131.204.15.93

i'm running the 10k (calling it a race might be a stretch, but we'll see...), and i'll be in the 5k. what i do in it depends on whether jenn dunn runs. for several years, i have simply paced her for the female 5k win, but starting at the back like last year and passing people was a lot of fun, so we shall see...

From Nevels on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 00:57:56 from 131.204.15.93

... and for what it's worth, banditing in the 10k might be a bit precarious. i know that mike allen got run off the course by a cop one year while he was running a mile with a friend of mine (mile 5, i think)...

From KP on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 01:04:51 from 98.67.171.202

are you serious? wow. i would have a bib for the 5k, so do you think they would actually say anything? in the end, i'm sure i'll just volunteer at the finish. i'm just not a rule-breaker like that. i could've registered for the 10k for free (i did the 5k) through ff. i should've just done that months ago rather than being indecisive.

i would say that you should race eric in the 10k, but last he told me he was only racing the 5k. you should beat that 34:59 pr you have... you've been running some nice mileage lately, i'm sure you could do it.

From Nevels on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 02:52:11 from 131.204.15.93

no one's ever said anything to me about banditing the 5k, so who knows...

i would be all for shooting for a new pr, but cotton row is a rough course on which to pr. i've never even gone under 37 on that course...

From KP on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 09:38:32 from 65.208.22.26

if i did bandit, i wouldn't cross the finish line. that just confuses too many people. i've worked the finish line before, and it is a nightmare to deal with bandits. i would just pull off to the side before that.

it is a tough course. i didn't even think about that. how could i forget about the hill?!?! that thing sucks. i guess you'll have to pr at river city next year or find another flat 10k. we don't have many in huntsville.

From The Quiet Pirate on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 09:45:37 from 24.199.205.252

Tennis sounds like fun. I've never taken any lessons, so I just jump and flail around a lot. It's a good workout though, and the people I play with get a good laugh.

Sorry about your flat tire. I'm afraid that MR will get a flat tire on one of our long runs & we won't have a water boy. We need to get a fix a flat for bikes.

Have fun on your run this week-end! Glad you made it back home safely.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 10:37:45 from 72.102.60.217

Nobody ever taught you how to fix a flat? It's so much easier than pushing! I'd teach you how if you lived closer.

From KP on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 10:47:27 from 65.208.22.26

thanks QP - tennis is a lot of fun. it made me realize that i really do miss it. i just don't have time for a league right now. that still shouldn't stop me from playing for fun occasionally.

mike - i know how to on a car. unfortunately, i've done it a time or two. i don't know how to on a bike. when i bought it the guy at the bike store asked me if i wanted to buy a tire kit and i told him no, i would just bring it to the store if i had a problem. in all my years growing up, i don't ever remember having a flat tire on a bike (and i rode a lot), so i was very surprised about this one. and, mad...

These are great for preventing flats!

My mom always wanted me to learn to play tennis - I guess that's why I never did :) My mantra is that I don't play sports where the ball is smaller than my head!

I'm sorry about your bike, we get flats occasionally, but we also usually just ride as a family.

Nice work on the paced miles with the 10K group! Working a finish line and watching everyone come in is really a fun thing to do if you've never done it before!!

From Lily on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 15:23:30 from 67.199.181.73

13 hours in a car is pure hell... in my humble opinion.

From Teena Marie on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 19:15:48 from 174.52.45.85

Stupid flat tire! So sorry.

LOVE Arby's!!!

Enjoy your free time!! :)
