My brother told me a while back that he wanted to try out my gym to see if he was interested in working out there.  So today at church he asked if we could go after church.  I told him sure; I would run on the dreadmill while he lifted weights or whatever it is that he wanted to do.  The more I thought about it, the more I realized I did not want to run inside.  It just plain sucks.  So, I showed him around and did 10 minutes of ab work and thought I was going to die.  I asked him if he was okay and said that I was going to run trails.  By the way, how do y'all do like 45 minutes of ab work?  I know that Scott does stuff like this.  10 minutes was killer for me.  It sucked.

I got to Monte Sano about 1PM and realized that the person in front of me was paying to get into the park.  Crap!  I've never paid to get in.  The gate person only sits in the booth during normal hours on the weekends, so when my buddies and I meet up there at 6AM, they aren't collecting money yet.  I drove all the way down the mountain to the ATM and back up to pay the lady my $3.  That wasted a good 30 minutes.  Argh.

I was running in the heat of the day.  According to my car, it was about 93* when I started at 1:30.  I had my handheld water bottle with me.  The plan was to run the first half of the McKay Hollow Trail Race course with a finish up Death Trail.  Well, about 1.5 miles into the run, I got lost.  I am pretty sure I know where I took my wrong turn, but I ended up doing part of what I had just run twice which really irritated me.  I still don't see how I did that.  I made it through my favorite part of the mountain, Stone Cuts.  This area is absolutely beautiful.

part of Stone Cuts

At the top of Stone Cuts (yes,  you climb the rocks), the course runs along a trail.  It appeared to me that no one had been running up there because the brush and weeds were so thick.  I should've taken a pic.  They literally came up to my chest and blocked just about the whole trail.  I could just make it out if I looked straight down.  I was a bit worried about seeing the state bird of Alabama, the snake, in this section, so I was booking it.  I wish they would maintain that area a little better.  I paid my $3 to get into the park, I should at least be able to see the trails!  (I know a guy that used to work there for like 3 years and he told me that all they do is play around all day, not do important things like trail maintenance, so I am a little irritated about it.)  Shortly after Stone Cuts is where I got lost.  I ended up coming to the area again in my exploring, but decided that I did not want to bushwhack my way through the wilderness at the top again, so I just ran by.

just what some Alabama trails look like...

I finally came to the 3-benches intersection (you guessed it, 3 benches are there) and knew where I was.  Yay!  I took Goat Trail through the woods for several miles until I had a nice little climb back up to civilization.  That is where I encountered my first people of the day; a family of 6 out biking.  They were slow, so I ran past them and around the top of the mountain to my car.  I was glad to see it.  This was the first time that I've ever emptied my water bottle on a run.  I ran out with probably a mile to go.  I was completely soaked in sweat from the darn humidity.  It was pretty brutal out today.

climb back to civilization.  hills like this = walk break!

I have noticed that I don't really get blisters from road running, but get them terribly from trail running.  They are always in the same area, on the balls of my feet.  Anyone have any insight as to why?  It is irritating and painful.  I guess on the downhills I am probably more on my toes, but isn't everyone?

I hope y'all are all having a wonderful Father's Day!

Wow! What great pictures! I'd choose to run outside over a TM also.

BTW, I suck at the gym also!

This was awesome to read and your pictures are great.

From Derunzo on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 08:53:21 from 64.56.60.130

Sounds like a sweaty awesome time!

From MissMary on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 09:18:38 from 99.185.60.234

I had a similar experience running in the heat on Saturday. I love your pictures. I think I'll run with my camera and a little cash too next time. (Sometimes I do errands on long runs). :0

From RivertonPaul on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 11:16:50 from 67.42.27.114

What pretty terrain.

From Michelle on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 11:21:59 from 71.212.190.146

Beautiful pictures. I am glad you enjoyed your trail run, but in the heat of the day, no so fun.

From Bonnie on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 12:30:53 from 128.196.228.134

What beautiful pictures KP!! And, what a great time! I think your feet are sliding in your shoes when you trail run. You might want to try wearing slightly thicker socks (but wick-dry ones).

From Lysa on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 12:42:23 from 174.52.15.101

wow, that is beautiful!! good job on your run!

From Nevels on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 12:55:12 from 131.204.15.93

those are some of the more enjoyable running trails up there...

regarding the blisters, i think bonnie is correct about your feet sliding. on trails, your feet don't land as evenly as they do on roads (obviously), and they are getting poked and prodded by rocks/roots/etc constantly, which shoves your feet around in the shoe. another big contributing factor (the one that gets me occasionally) is that on those trails, you can run for miles and miles with a slight camber to the trail (i.e., running on a slant), which causes your feet to rub against the shoe in places where they are not used to it with every footfall.

the solution, as bonnie pointed out, could be to wear thicker socks to prevent sliding, but, oddly enough, it could also be to wear thinner socks to reduce the amount of constant friction against the shoe.

got to love the "experiment of one"

From Bonnie on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 12:59:13 from 128.196.228.134

;-) ... you could also try either tying your shoes a little differently (there are ways to reduce the amount of sliding around). You can also try a dress-shoe insert that you can get at any shoe or department store, ask them if they have any foot pads (they make them for the super high heeled shoes).

Nice run KP! Love the pics!

From KP on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 14:16:05 from 65.208.22.25

thanks guys! the pictures aren't the greatest. i carried my phone in my water bottle pocket in case of an emergency (because you get SUCH good cell reception in the woods), but snapped a few pics to share. the quality is horrible, but you can see what the trails look like. when i would take my phone out of the pocket, it would fog up from the humidity; hence how horrible and fuzzy the second pic is.

interesting about the socks, bonnie and nevels. i am not a fan of thin socks, whatsoever. i might try thicker ones though. i normally run in smartwool socks on the trails, but yesterday (and last week at my race) i was wearing some northface socks. they are a little thinner than the smartwools. i might have to trash them since this is two weeks in a row now that i’ve had issues with them. i use montrail inserts in my trail shoes, but might need to try something different. stinkin' blisters. they suck.

Half of my ab workouts are watching TV, so don't let the time fool you. :) Nice pics and good job getting out on those trails.

Looks like a great adventure. Way to stick it out and thanks for the interesting pictures.

From Run Dixie Run on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 18:40:13 from 65.210.186.34

KP, my family just got back from B-Ham just in time for Father's Day. My sons both said it's really hot there but stinking hot here. I guess that's a little hotter than "really hot."

Even with the heat, trails like yours are worth the run. Great pics.

From Nancy on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 20:08:25 from 76.27.19.206

Those are really cool pictures. I love running outside, but I would not like to run on those trails especially those rocks and the heat and humidity would kill me. You must be very tough.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 22:19:12 from 24.8.167.243

Great pictures.

I'm too chicken to run trails by myself. I'm afraid of getting lost.

From The Quiet Pirate on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 22:33:29 from 65.191.108.72

Beautiful trails. That uphill photo is really rocky- I can see why you'd want to walk. It looks super steep too.

I have no idea how you were able to run that kind of distance in 93 degree southern humid heat. That is crazier than doing an hour of ab workouts!

The trail looks so gorgeous that it might drag me out in that kind of heat too if the alternative was a treadmill. Great run & nice post.

What beatiful pictures! What an awesome run! You are quite the endurance trail runner--that is some wicked heat! Good luck with finding the blister solution--I ran one trail half marathon recently and it wasn't even a real trail and I had the same problem with blisters suddenly making an appearance.

From auntieem on Tue, Jun 22, 2010 at 10:13:24 from 24.18.77.246

Great post, KP! Thanks for the pictures; I love to see where others run. It is absolutely gorgeous! Lucky you to have these trails as your running playground.

KP - very nice workout, abs of steel, legs of iron, pig iron (Alabama football reference) keep up those runner high runs.

THAT IS BEAUTIFUL!!! But i never would have run in that heat. You are a rock star in my book, I am inside at 75!!!

From runningafterbabies on Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 18:38:21 from 67.177.9.74

I love smart wool socks.

My ccusin that lives in Huntsville is doing the Rocket City marathon. Have you ever done it?

From Teena Marie on Wed, Jun 23, 2010 at 18:53:37 from 174.52.45.85

Breath-taking pics! Very nice. But I am with Kelli on this one ... that heat sounds MISERABLE!!! (I'm such a baby, I would have stayed at the gym.)

Nice!

From KP on Thu, Jun 24, 2010 at 13:51:17 from 65.208.22.25

I haven't done the Rocket City Marathon, but I run along the coure all the time. It's a flat and fast one.

From Burt on Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 11:43:35 from 68.225.214.248

KP - you're hot. I'm not talking HOPA hot either. Unless you keep crawling under cars. I should actually read this entry.

From Burt on Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 23:20:55 from 68.225.214.248

Due to the awkward silence I feel I must explain that the reason I called KP hot is because this hot discussion just made the Hot Discussion Board. FRB lingo. Get with it.

From KP on Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 08:32:35 from 65.208.22.25

a) why were you looking at an entry from 2 months ago?

b) i don't want to be on the hot discussion board.

From Burt on Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 10:21:54 from 68.225.214.248

a) Don't flatter yourself. I wasn't stalking you this time. You made the Hot Discussion Board, and that's priiitty obvious.

b) Then you shouldn't be such a social butterfly. Everybody loves KP.

c) Was there a c? If you want to get off, you better start commenting on the people who recently raced this weekend, Nan, Lindsay, Teena Marie, RivertonPaul, Wesemann, etc...
