Went to speed work last night.  This has been going on for about 6 weeks at Fleet Feet, but I haven't been able to attend because of my training group.  That is over (yay!) until August when the next one starts up.  I thought this might do me some good.  Boy oh boy!  I've never really done anything more than straights and curves on a track (and it was more in a "joking" manner with my friends), so this was much harder than I anticipated.

Ran .70 over to the park for warm-up - 9:39 pace.

Kyle, our "coach" (really he is a FF employee, but he knows his stuff) told us to run about 5 seconds off of our "goal pace".  We were supposed to do 10-400's with a 1:40 jogging break in the middle.  Since I hadn't been to one of these before, I had no clue what he was talking about.  I think he will do an analysis of me next week (if I go back!) where he makes me run a mile as fast as I can or something like that.  He didn't do it last night because he had another one-time training group on proper running form.  The sad thing is, I could probably benefit from that program too.  Anyways, I said I'd just stick to the back with the slowest people, but I ended up leaving them because they were too slow.  I ran towards the middle-back of group 3 of 4.  I ran a hard-comfortable pace and didn't look at my watch at all during it.

Here are my splits.  Slow, slow, slow, slow, slow.

1:45 (1:40) 1:55 (1:40) 2:00 (1:40) 2:07 (1:40) 2:02 (1:40)

3 minute break

2:06 (1:40) 2:09 (1:40) 2:07 (1:40) 2:11 (1:40) 1:49 (1:40)

I think one of the "advantages" of having a Garmin is so that you can look at it while you run to know if you are hitting your desired pace or not.  I didn't look at mine a single time during the run, just got all the splits when it was over.  This was all effort based.  I don't even know what pace these are (approx??).  Is there a way to figure that out?

This was a hard workout for me.  The temp was hovering right at 90* and the humidity was high.  We were out in the open with no shade to block the blistering sun.  I definitely whined a little during it, but I do think I'll be back.  When it was all said and done, I had "fun".

We took a shortcut back to FF through a creek and the girl right in front of me stepped on a snake!  ICK!

Today (Tuesday) my mama/best friend/buddy/pal/partner-in-crime leaves for Colorado for a week!  To say that I'm a bit jealous would be an understatement.  I'm pretty sure this is the first time she has ever left Huntsville, AL without me at her side.  I'm not a happy camper.  I know she'll have a good time, but I wanna gooooo toooooooooooo.  Wahhhhh... Anyways, I'll tell her to wave hello to Carolyn, Michelle, and Nan as she passes over!

Actually, your times on the 400s are pretty speedy. If you upload your workout from the Garmin to training center, it should show you your average pace for each 400, assuming you recorded each 400 as a separate lap.

What is your mom coming to Colorado for? What part of Colorado.

If you were running 400 meter repeats just multiply the splits by 4 to get your pace. Sounds like it was a good workout to take you out of your comfort zone.

Those paces aren't slow, especially since you did so many. You were around 8 minute pace, give or take, for all of them. Good job!

If you pressed the lap button before and after each of the efforts, you should be able to review the laps to see average pace, too. Like Andy said, 400s are pretty easy to get a ballpark figure for.

carolyn - thanks! i always forget about the garmin software as i rarely upload my workouts on there. i just log them in a notebook and here. she and a high school friend are flying out to visit with another high school friend. they fly into denver today but have different lodges booked all over the place for the week to see different things. i have no clue what areas they are going to other than denver.

andy - duh! thanks.

tracy - i have no clue how to use my watch other than start, stop, and reset. a girl i was with set it up for "intervals" so that it would beep at me to start when the 1:40 rest break was over and when i had gone the distance. kyle set up cones for the .25 distance and my watch generally beeped about the right time.

That's a whole lot of 400s! And your pace is pretty fast, actually. Just mulitply each one by 4 to get the 1600 (mile) pace. So, a 1:40 for a 400m is 6:40 mile. Good job.

Great job on the speedwork. As others have said these are pretty fast. Ideally you should run at a pace that you can hold for all the 400s but it takes some time to figure that out. You can go to http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm and enter a recent race time and it will give you target times for all distances. Good luck!

AWESOME 400s! They are not slow at all. That's how fast I run mine but not 10 of them and definitely not in that heat and sun beating down. EXCELLENT speed work, KP!

I'm with the group - you did a GREAT job on the speed work. I rarely look at my garmin during speed work, I usually go by feel - hard for 400's and I'd do mile repeats at comfortably hard. I think by how you were saying you were feeling, you've got a little more speed in those legs than you're willing to give :) However, speed work is SO subjective to the day and temps and how YOU feel. I guess that's why I don't like looking at my Garmin.

Either way, I think you should go back - you've got an old fat pregnant lady's butt to kick in a race here soon! :)
