Fell asleep about 2AM this morning watching a movie ("The Bounty Hunter" - Kinda cute.  Good date movie.  I've seen some crappy movies lately, so I'd give this one 3.75 stars) and was up staring at the ceiling at 5AM.  I would've gotten up and ran but I was comfy and frustrated and I knew I had a bit of an adventure tonight.

Jonathan wanted to do a duathlon with biking and running tonight and I was up for the challenge!  My only concern was the roads.  We may live in the country, but the route we were going to take put us on a VERY busy road for about a mile.  This is the very road (not the same spot, thankfully) that his sister died in a car crash on when we were all 3 in high school.  Therefore, riding a bike on it made me a bit apprehensive.  I got a lecture from my mom (not happy about our route), he got a lecture from his mom (definitely not happy about our route) and we got a lecture from me (nervous about our route).  All was well on the bike ride for the most part.  Starting off, about a mile into the ride, Jonathan ran over a freshly killed raccoon!  He did not see it and almost fell off his bike.  I nearly fell off mine laughing so hard.  The busy road was, well, busy.  It really has no shoulder for riders (especially those of us on road bikes) so I was trying to stick to the edge as best I could.  I'm pretty sure I nearly got hit about 107 times... but, who's counting?  We finally turn off that road and onto a not-as-busy-rolling-hill-country-road.  This road is still busier than I would've liked (I prefer zero traffic) and I was thisclose to being hit by an 18-wheeler.  I was cruising along quite well and was a few hundred feet in front of Jonathan, as he was on a mountain bike (I have a new love for road bikes after tonight!), when I heard a car coming up behind me FAST.  I could see that another car was coming in the other direction and that this big loud thing behind me was quickly approaching.  So I whipped over to the side of the road (gravel, broken glass, rough terrain - oh so good for a road bike) and then fell down into a ditch all to get away from an 18-wheeler!  Scary!  He slowed down about the time I fell in the quite large ditch and Jonathan chased him down and possibly told him he was #1... I don't know, I was just telling myself not to cry at that point and didn't even really pay attention to what he was doing.  I got back on my bike and peddled the rest of the way to our stopping point.  We turned onto a very country road for the last 4 or so miles and we rode at a nice leisurely pace side-by-side and chatted the whole time.  It was nice since we didn't really get to talk much during most of the ride due to the fact that I was almost being killed.  We did 10.3 miles total biking.  I did pass one of my very favorite spots after the near-death experience.  This is where I put in to kayak during the summer.  Love it!

 Flint River

We parked our bikes, walked the 100 or so feet to the start of our run and took off.  It was hot (85* when we started at 6:30PM) and humid (I'd say at least 1,438%).  My calves were cramping so I stopped and stretched them about .30 into the run for just a second.  Jonathan took off and added a bit extra to his run.  On my way back I was very worried about him as I thought I should be able to see him if he ran to where I thought he had (he didn't) so I walked about .20 waiting to see him come into sight.  He never did.  After the blissful walk break I ran the rest of the route to make it an even 3.1.  I then immediately started walking back down the course to look for my buddy!  Can you imagine me having to tell his mom that he was hit by a car while we were running?  That really is all I kept thinking about the last bit of my run.  Thankfully as I crested the top of my hill, he was cresting the top of his hill, about .25 from the finish.  (Did I mention that this was a very rolling hill type course that sucked after biking).  I sprinted the last .10 with him to the finish.  He still beat me after I had a couple minute break.  Dangit.  It was a pretty close battle though.

Yep, the reflectors on my bike work.

Wow - I am smiling way too hard.  That is the look of happiness due to being done.  From this little jaunt today, I got my first major allergy attack of the year.  I've been very fortunate thus far... until today.  This one is a doozie.  My eyes were swelling shut.  Darn pollen.  Argh...

Look at that hottie! So, did you lock your bikes up when you went running?

From KP on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 00:54:42 from 98.67.106.156

you think jonathan is a hottie? i really don't. maybe it is because we have more of a brotherly/sisterly relationship.

did we lock our bikes up? ha! this is the country. people don't steal things around here. (and we might've parked at a friends house that is way off the road...) seriously though, people don't steal around here. everyone has guns and knows how to use them; with the exception of me.

Awesome workout KP! Look at you cheesing in the pic lol. Hey that river looks like a nice fishing spot!

Exercise is supposed to be a stress reliever. You always seem to add a little danger to all of your workouts. Great job on the biking and running.

scary bike riding into the ditch

I am very afraid of riding my bike on the busy highways out in my neck of the woods, and your story just re-affirms my fears... but the country hilly road sounds great. You've just got to get to the country roads before you can enjoy them.

You & Jonathan both look like a couple of hard core hotties...your smile is cute! I've felt that way after finishing a tough workout too.

Congrats on a great workout & keeping safe.

So is Jonathan just a friend? Sorry to pry. He looks very tall.

You had quite the scary bike ride. Be careful out there!

From KP on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 14:54:27 from 65.208.22.26

Vinh - I've definitely been fishing on that river. I don't think I've caught anything, but have seen lots of snakes. ICK!

Andy - It's a stressful stress reliever.

CiC - Jonathan is definitely JUST a friend. He's a good guy, but he gets on my nerves toooooooo much for me to ever date him. He is just my designated workout buddy. He is tall... I'd say 6'4" or so, and not an ounce of fat on him. Darn him!

From Running Donkey on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 14:54:28 from 208.77.153.5

This sounds like such a fun workout! (minus the near death experience & stress buildup due to the potential of having a near death experience). You just opened up a can of worms posting that pic :) Too cute!!

What a great workout! You both look great!

we did a 2 day canoe trip down the Green river in Kentucky, it was a BLAST. We camped out on a sand bar. The only down side was that the green river does not have ANY current, so we had to work really hard to get anywhere, my back and arms were so tired at the end of this trip! I tried open ocean kayaking in Florida, I sucked bad ;-). You rock KP!

From auntieem on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 17:05:41 from 24.18.77.246

What an adventure! That is one gorgeous kayak spot also. I hate busy roads on my bike too, but I've just learned to deal with it when I have to.

From RAD on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 18:28:54 from 67.172.229.125

wow...you are one CRAZY girl! I get so paranoid about busy roads, the older I get and the more kids I have the crazier I get about stuff like that. When I read that you fell into a ditch I literally gasped and my daughter asked "what happened?" You be careful out there, or I'll blister your bottom!!!

However, you did have a wonderful duathalon and it seems like a good time with a good FRIEND :) The scenery looks beautiful, but your stories always remind me how grateful I am to live in Utah where there is nearly always a whole extra lane on the shoulder! Don't know if it's the bad drivers or big cars hauling the wads of people in our families...but we usually get nice big shoulders to run and bike on.

Good report and good pictures.

From KP on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 21:56:39 from 98.67.106.156

Do you see how we are both glistening?? Ahhhhh... the LOVELY humidity...

Rachel Decker Moody! Don't you be starting something. If he were more than a friend, I would say so. I'm not Bec! haha... For real, he is just a friend. You know how you have "friends" that you flirt with (or, well, before you were married), well, he and I don't even do that. It is such a platonic relationship.

Very nice report and pics. It looks like you guys worked up a nice sweat. Excellent!

I agree with Burt about the hottie :)

From Toby on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 23:41:43 from 216.194.124.36

That is one thing I DON'T miss about growing up in GA is the humidity! AND those southern boys sure are cute :)

From Burt on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 03:13:01 from 98.177.220.145

I told you he was a hotty, Toby.

From Kim on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 12:28:48 from 74.211.9.52

Wow! I love adventures, but not nearly getting killed adventures! Glad you are ok! Thanks for the fun read!
