3.1 mile Panorama Loop with my buddies.  We were all slow.  I was recovering from my trail race and they were recovering from a hilly 10k that was in town on Saturday.  Nice and chatty; just the way I like it.  The air was sooooooo thick with humidity.  I was dripping sweat from a measly 5k.  I mean dripping.

A friend that I scrapbook with has a 9ish year old daughter named Carys who is a competitive gymnast.  Well during the summer they are having to run .50 mile loops 3 times/week.  They do 1 loop for a few weeks, 2 loops for a few weeks, 3 loops for a few weeks, and then 4 loops for a few weeks at the end of the summer.  So, they are working up to 2 miles.  Each loop has to be completed in less than 5 minutes which would be a 10 minute mile pace.  Carys has been finishing her 1 loop in like 4:50 which is pretty good.  But, other girls are beating her and she is not happy with that.  So, Dawn (my friend - her mom), called me last week and asked me to come by and run with her for a minute and give her some pointers.  We ran our first .50 in 4:18.  We stopped at the end of the street and I gave her a few pointers and then we ran the second .50 in 4:04.  Dawn had originally asked me to come by just this once to give my opinion, but I offered to come every Monday after my normal run to get in a few extra miles and work with Carys.  I don't mind one bit.  Actually, I could use the extra mileage.  I think next week I'll try to push her to 1.50 without stopping in the middle for pointers like we did this time.  Is that too much too soon for a 9-year old that doesn't really run much?  Oh well... I guess we'll find out next Monday.  I think last night was a success.

A funny little tid-bit:  So when I got to Dawn's house we talked for a few minutes before Carys and I were ready to go.  The family went inside and we were walking to the end of the driveway.  I asked Carys if she wanted to stretch for a minute and I started stretching my calves on the curb.  She was like "ummmmm... okay" and proceeded to do the splits, I mean completely do the splits, in the middle of her concrete driveway.  OUCH!  I told her that was enough stretching and started running.  I nearly cried just looking at her.

Thanks for the attaboy, UVM was a very good marathon for me...now what's up next for you? And how can I lend a helping hand to help you succeed?

Good job, coach. What tips did you give her?

But she was stretched out after the splits, huh???

Nice job, humidity and all. YUCK, I know I would quit. Better stay in the desert!

ehhhh... i'm not the best "coach" so i really just tried to run with her and push the pace. i told her not to run on her tip-toes and to quit swinging her arms in front of her chest. she didn't really listen. oh well, i don't have proper running form either. as long as she can get it done, i don't mind.

I don't think 1.5 would be too hard for her (or pushing her too much) as long as she doesn't whine too much. That is my 9 year old's problem. She usually starts out sprinting then can't hang on past about 1/5th of a mile :) I try to get her to pace herself, but I don't think she gets it.

The best running form 'tip' I like is 'tall puppet'. You want to run loose like a marionette, but tall and straight as if a string was coming from the top of your head holding you up. Makes running and breathing easier, because you're not using extra muscles to tense up your body. So tell her to relax her arms and not swing them past the mid-line of her body and let her legs kick back as well. Don't 'stretch' her stride - feet should land mid-foot (although most of us hit heel first; since she's used to dancing tip toes is natural for her) and right under the hips. Like if you took a video and took out the background it's like your upper body isn't moving and your legs are 'cycling' underneath you.

Well, now that I've brain dumped 99% of what I know about form - good luck getting a 9 year old to do it, because I have issues doing it!!

Just being there for her and telling her she can do it and conditioning her cardio is going to probably do more than any 'form' tips. Especially if she is anything like my 9 year old girl! Keep it simple and just be a cheer leader and you'll always be her best running coach!

Good luck with the humidity - I'm with Kelli, I'll stick to the nice dry desert!

That is so cool that you're taking time to mentor a young runner like that!

I wish I had a kid to 'coach' how cool is that! and she has already improved her time!

LOL about the stretching!!! Sounds like it will be a fun relationship.

I'm a little tired and at first I misread the first sentence, "Paranormal Loop." Like, ghosts or bending spoons without touching? Wake up Sno!

Maybe she can coach you on the splits :) That totally cracked me up.

Ouch! That does make me grimace just to visualize it! Pretty fun running with 9 year olds, eh? My advice would be to just stay non competitive with it and have FUN. And, 9 year olds are young enough that their running form is pretty amazing. I love to watch them run; I feel like I learn so much. Like how their back leg extends behind them so long and their weight is perfectly centered over the foot plant point. Sounds like your little runner really wants to go faster!
